VHS : Sabrina (Commemorative Edition)
Let me start out by saying that if you've seen the remake with Harrison Ford, I am so sorry, but this film will erase that from your memory. You've got Audrey Hepburn, one of the greatest actresses of all time and my personal favorite, as the beautiful title character and Humphrey Bogart, perhaps the greatest actor there ever was and also my favorite actor, and William Holden, another big shot, fighting over her heart as hillarity ensues, in what has to be one of the essential classic Romantic Comedies.

VHS : Silver Chalice
One of the worst films in this genre starring Paul Newman, Virginia Mayo, Jack Palance, Pier Angeli, Joseph Wiseman, Natalie Wood, E.G. Marshall, Lorne Greene and Alexander Scourby. The story follows the life of a Greek slave asked to craft a silver chalice to be used at the Last Supper.

Horrible performances and direction all around except for Jack Palance as Simon the Magician: I would give the film a -100 if Palance weren't in it. Given the dialogue and direction, it's immediately evident that those involved knew little about antiquity or anything about film making in general. The horribly fake backdrops leave the impression of a bad play rather than a movie. This is the film on which Paul Newman commented that it would be his last appearance in sandals and a cocktail dress: I'd be ashamed ... Read More

VHS : 5 Fingers
***** 1952. Co-written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Based on L.C. Moyzisch's Operation Cicero, the film earned two nominations for the Oscars, one Golden Globe (screenplay) and the 1953 Edgar Allan Poe award. A servant at the British embassy in Ankara delivers top secrets documents to the Germans. Another masterpiece by Mankiewicz who, by using the spy movies genre this time, handles two of his favorite themes; interplay between social classes and the humiliation theme. You can find here Five Fingers [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg. 2 Import - Great Britain ] a DVD release of this movie but, believe me, if you own a DVD player that can read zone 2 DVD's, go to Amazon.fr and choose the Mankiewicz box set released by Carlotta films. This set contains also DRAGONWYCK and A LETTER TO THREE WIVES. The quality of these ... Read More

VHS : The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Sure, it's early Hollywood - Maureen O'Hara's hair remains perfectly styled even after she is tortured - but the film remains for me as fresh and wonderful as when I first saw it in the 1930s.

VHS : Reap the Wild Wind
Paulette Goddard was the frontrunner to play Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" until Vivien Leigh pipped her at the post. Four years later, Goddard finally got the chance to play another firebrand Southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille's REAP THE WILD WIND, a costume adventure with the emphasis on costume--and filmed in glowing early Technicolor.

Goddard plays Loxi Claiborne, the feisty manager of a ship salvage company in 1840s Key West, Florida. Loxi falls in love with Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne); but later finds herself caught under the spell of his attractive arch-rival, Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland). Playing one man off the other, Loxi gets caught in the middle of a dangerous battle between rival shipping companies, masterminded by scheming King Cutler (Raymond Massey).

VHS : Adventures of Mark Twain (1944)
I especially enjoyed the early scenes which were wonderful and seeing Twain on the riverboat was thrilling. For a forties Hollywood bio, this film does remarkably well. There are factual errors here and there but on the whole, it was a pleasant surprise to see that they got much of it right. I've read that his daughter Clara was a consultant on this movie. Of course it also contained a typically overly sentimental death scene which all films of that era included. I've only been able to see this movie on TCM. Unfortunately, it is unavailable on VHS or DVD.
I don't understand why they have recently issued the Max Steiner score on CD but the DVD is still not available!
