From Little Caesar to George M. Cohan. Winning an Academy Award for Best Actor, Cagney is wonderful. One of the best American movies ever made. Great for family viewing, including young children. And for young children, don't forget to let them see Errol Flynn in Robin Hood.

VHS : His Butler's Sister (B&W)
One of Deanna Durbin's best movies of the period, HIS BUTLER'S SISTER (1943) features the adorable songbird in a comedic story of mixed identities and showbusiness dreams. Co-starring with Franchot Tone, one of her most formidable and appealing leading men, Deanna shines brightly here!

Stagestruck teen Ann Carter (Deanna Durbin) gets off the train in New York city, and goes to stay with her rich older brother (Pat O'Brien) in his ritzy mansion. Unbeknownst to Ann, he's actually the butler of young Broadway composer Charles Gerard (Franchot Tone). Desperate to appear on the stage one way or another, Ann plays along with her brother and becomes the new maid, in a bid to kick-start her showbiz career. All manner of hilarious comic hijinks and mixed identities ensue before Ann's musical ... Read More

Howard Hawkes can do it all. The screwball comedy was never better and alas never will be better. I suppose you could say this is a gimmick picture as they use a live leopard in a number of scenes. The Cary Grant brontosaurus has a small part as well.

Hepburn sees Cary the four-eyed prof and goes after the befuddled handsome man with everything a 1930's girl has. Madcap motor-mouth one liners rip away. Cary is embarrassed, disgraced, and horrified for ninety minutes till Hepburn cannot be denied. Amazing fast pace and editing for one of the finest comedies ever made; it can be watched again and again.

VHS : I'll Be Yours
This sweet and old-fashioned offering from the lovely Deanna Durbin is very much a film of another time. A simple and liesurely paced film about a small town girl going to the big city shortly after her father's passing, there is a sweet innocence to both the humor and the love story that should not be confused as lightweight. Based on a screenplay by the great Preston Sturges, the story really gets going slowly and Deanna carries the first portion of this film on her considerable charm. By the end, you'll be smiling, glad you stuck around for a film that remains true to its intent.

Deanna is Louise Dinglebusher (!), a girl from the small town of Cobleskil not sure what to expect from the city of New York. Eating on a budget after landing a job as an usherette through a fellow Cobleskil alum, she ... Read More

I always felt that 20th Century Fox put out the best story/music combination in the mid 1930s to early 1940s. There is a light hearted bounciness to the songs and these Fox musicals are, for me, much preferred to the overdone, sluggish MGM musicals. WB was great too but had that harsh urban twist to them which is by no means a knock to that studio. I love them. The 20th musicals, with Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Jack Haley, Betty Grable, Cesar Romero, John Payne, Jack Oakie, display in these performers, an infectious light-hearted quality. Too bad Dick Powell couldn't have been part of this group after 1935; he would have fit right in with his high likeability factor. Both of Dick Powell's loan outs to Fox, "On the Avenue," along with the forgotten but terrific "Thanks a Million," from 1935, are 2 of his very best ... Read More

VHS : Mr Deeds Goes to Town
After seeing the remake (Mr. Deeds), I wanted to see the original. And as usual, the original was head-and-shoulders above the remake, and made the remake seem pretty pointless.

The plot is the same--Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) unexpectedly inherits a fortune from an uncle he'd never met, then goes to the city to take care of the legalities.

Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur) is a tough newspaper reporter who poses as sweet, innocent Mary Dawson to get the scoop on him.

But instead of a crooked board of directors, there's a greedy cousin, and there are no over-the-top silly jokes. It's still funny, but it doesn't resort to idiocy to accomplish that. Really made me wonder why lately Hollywood seems to think that only slapstick is funny.

It did take me a while to warm up to Gary ... Read More
