VHS : Young Tom Edison
Tom Edison is one of the scientific geniuses that has most effected daily life in the modern world. However, as a child, his eccentric behavior and overactive mind got him into trouble. This film depicts Tom's (Mickey Rooney) early life, his fascination with Morse Code, his interest in combining chemicals, his thirst for knowledge, and his close relationships with his sister (Virginia Weidler) and his mother (Fay Bainter).

The film is shorter than most, but it covers many different stories and is highly entertaining. Ironically, in the part of a highly active and sometimes twitchy man, Rooney is much more subdued. It is an interesting portrayal, but do not expect to see the guy from all those musicals. Weidler is sweet and fun in her part, especially when she gets to pick on the town bully ... Read More

VHS : Babes on Broadway
I thought I was a fan of Judy Garland. I thought Mickey Rooney was "just okay." Then I saw this. What fun!!! These poor kids never made the money they were worth - and they were worked hard! You don't see talent like this today! So many scenes! So many costume changes! So many vignettes!

But I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I actually saw Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in BLACKFACE! I'm surprised this video hasn't been banned! (And I'm glad it hasn't - even though I was conflicted by my own fascination!) This is music - this is talent - this is history! No, we don't do this anymore - but we did. We did at a time and in a place when we didn't know any better. And it's a fascinating look at who we were - where we were - and with 20/20 hindsight, where we were going.

If you ... Read More

VHS : The Women
I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. It wasn't until the end that it hit me -- there were no men in the actual scenes. Men were the main subject, but it was all women. A great cast of women from the 30's & 40's. The costumes are great (what it must have looked like in color when they filmed it -- wow!). This is one of my favorite films.

6.Too Hot to Handle (1938) starring: Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Walter Pidgeon, Walter Connolly, Leo Carrillo

Another great Gable flick, this one with Myrna Loy (the Queen of Hollywood, to Gable's King). Clark plays a ruthless newsreel photographer trying to stick it to rival Walter Pidgeon and woo Amelia Earhart-style aviatrix Myrna. Fast, funny, and politically incorrect. Did I mention fast?

VHS : Great Man Votes
This was the first movie I had seen of John Barrymore. Unfortunately you can see the ware that his real life alcohol problem had on him by that time. I read where he could not remember his lines and had to read them off of cue cards throughout the whole movie. But I will tell you, history is right about one thing. John Barrymore was and still is one of the greatest character actors that there ever was. Being an alcoholic, he is actually drunk (in real life) throughout this movie. And yet he can still pull off a prize winning performance. This is a great movie and a great way to meet John Barrymore.

VHS : Best Foot Forward
Best Foot Forward is a pleasant diversion to watch even still today. It was originally a successful Broadway play which MGM got the rights to and filmed in colour.
The movie was definitely aimed at a teenage audience to inspire them to get into the military swing of things, you might say.It concerns three young cadet sergeants and their girls. There is an up coming prom with the neighbouring girls school but one of the sergeants has written to Lucille Ball who has unexpectedly accepted his invitation to attend the prom with him.Now he has the task of trying to keep his girl from finding out AND attending the prom.To top things off Lucille Ball, due to academy rules, can only go with him under his girlfriends' name! And she's only there at her managers' insistence,to get publicity! His girlfriend eventually finds out,and boy falls ... Read More
