VHS : Big Jake
As usual it is a typical great John Wayne movie. (I'm partial to any of his movies.) A good portrayal of a time when horseless carriages were joining horse and wagon. The supporting roles are well played. His son, Patrick Wayne along with Christopher Mitchum do a very good job of portraying two dissimilar sons that have not seen their dad in a long while. Richard Boone adds to the character of the film and of course Maureen O'Hara is as natural as ever as an actress. Bruce Cabot is a long standing support actor for John Wayne and is just as good!

I can't give it 5 stars because of the violence. I don't watch it as much as all of his others because of it. The opening scenses and two other particular scenes, that are not boldly shown but the viewer knows exactly what is happening, ... Read More

I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's singing and some of the other movies that she had played in. I just don't think this was a good choice for her to star in. I felt that they could have chosen someone who looked and sang at least a little similar to Billie. But, I see the director didn't care about that either, instead choosing someone ... Read More

VHS : Ferris Bueller's Day Off
In 1985 (the year I was born people!) a certain movie was released that ultimately became a phenomenon. It has been labeled the movie of the 80's; the poster child for teen films everywhere. It is lauded by many and sparked a generation of look-alikes that are still being churned out even today. That movie is `The Breakfast Club'.

I hate that movie.

The following year the same writer/director behind the overrated slosh known as `The Breakfast Club' wrote and directed `Ferris Bueller's Day Off', yet another film that has been labeled a film of a decade. This time though, John Hughes hit it out of the park. There is no `corn' factor that was so prevalent in `The Breakfast Club'. Sure, there is dancing and obvious 80's flare, but this is a teen movie that can still hold up ... Read More

After selection, the movie was mailed to me in exactly the time frame adverstised. Knowing it was previously viewed I was pleasantly surprised to find the DVD in perfect order and played beautiful. I recently saw Tina live in Houston. I wanted to see the movie again as it is a powerful tribute of where she was, how she got started, and how she was started again. I loved the heartfelt pain and triumped with her as she returned solo and became one of the greatest women of all time.

Read today's Headlines and see current Conspiracy theorists validated in this exciting, non-stop action thriller which points to shadow governments, to 'Enemies Within', to Deadly plots and extremist rogue branches of our Secret Service that ally themselves with those who would destroy America...It is right on the mark. The performances by this stellar cast starting with George Segal in a truly dramatic, Kennedy-like portrayal and Elliott Gould as the Vice-Presidential candidate is disarming and compelling and he and Segal both face, as the thematic allusions to J.F.K. remind us, the real dangers inherent in running for the highest office of the most important world power, the U.S. Their acting is superlative as is Conrad Janis' charismatic portrayal of the powerful, implacable, Cheney-like Deus Ex Machina working ... This is a great movie about a great president of the United States. My husband and I both enjoyed watching a replay of history that we had lived through. President Truman rates at the top of the list of best presidents with us.

Most blacks I know love this movie, even the most Europeanized. It is the first film that I am aware of to depict such a pro-African mindstate for African Americans. How groundbreaking this was in 1973 is lost to the people of today who can not comprehend the extent of anti-Africanism in American culture and what it was like for these first years when African Americans formally became full citizens, FULL HUMANS in America. This film has yet to be followed up as it drowned in the mist of blaxploitation.

Though I'm sure some African Americans out of touch will not get this movie, but it is interesting to note that the only person who rated it low on here was icebergslims, who I know to be white, though many of his reviews show an interest in Africana studies. Many of his reviews are spot on and insightful, ... Read More

This is outstanding! Richard Pryor is incredibly funny. A rich man's son goes to his Dad's store to pick out a toy and sees Richard Pyror so asks for him. It is hilarious and a must for anyone who likes a good comedy.

The directing in this movie sucks. The kids and I were like the little robots on MST3K during the whole movie. The directing was so bad we couldn't stop commenting on it and watch the darn movie. If Rob Taipert or Joss Wheadon directed it with the exact same cast it would have been one of the hottest female action films around. This director didn't capitalize on Rachel's striking beauty and her physical ability to do the stunts. Her character is very Xena and Buffy like with a dash of Linda Hamilton. The story was OK and entertaining. I don't blame her and the other actors for the "average" acting and schizophrenic photography. It was the director's fault. It's almost as if he had ADD or something. Amatuer. And where's the really cool outfit Rachel was wearing on the cover of the video box? I think all the cries ... Read More
