VHS : Laura (1944)
For the most part, this is a good film: well-written, well-photographed, well-directed and well-acted. But for me, Gene Tierney simply does not have the beauty or strength or charisma that the part of Laura seems to call for. She's certainly pretty, but not beautiful or striking. She's competent, but I wouldn't call her brilliant. I'm told that she is all these things but I really can't see it for myself. I can't, in my own imagination, see her walking into a room and turning everyone's head around, making men "desirous" or women "envious". An actress like Katherine Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman (obviously without any accent) or Lauren Bacall would have fit the part more convincingly.

Smoking, drinking, stripping and even gun violence. These are things you wouldn't expect from a Disney film. I saw the film when I was about 5 years old and remember thinking about how much fun it would be to be in the midst of a bar fight like the one in this movie. I will never forget how shocked I was to see the burlesque dancer take off her seemingly modest attire to reveal an hour glass half-dressed figure with a garter and blue fishnets. The reaction from the crowd, the sexual tension she created with her stripping- I wanted to be there!

Here's a quote from the song Let Me Be Good To You
"Hey fellas- i'll take off all my clothes. Hey fellas- there's nothing I won't do just for you!"

But apart from the bar scene, there were multiple depictions of drunkeness and more ... Read More

Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't buy any other product. I, for one, would like to see a little more tension in the story, a little more ambiguity, a priest who isn't quite so sure of himself, a congregation that maintains a healthy skepticism about its shepherd, even as it hungers for the ... VHS : Serenade

Some might say that Mario Lanza was overweight and not in his best voice for this Movie, but that would be judging him by those factors alone. This in my opinion ironically is Lanza's best Movie ever! Serenade is a very dramatic Movie with great performances from the likes of Joan Fontaine and in particular Sarita Montiel who really makes this Picture. Add this to the beautiful colourful backdrops and a haunting and dramatic score in the use of 'Serenade', and what you have is a cocktail for a fabulous Movie! For a two hour Film this could have been 'over-long' but in fact the two hours fly by as the whole is so absorbing.

This lush Masterpiece from 1956 is so under-rated as to never have been released on either Video or DVD in the United Kingdom - and only on Video for a limited period ... Read More

I saw this wonderful movie in 1990 when it first came out. I was already a Tim Burton fan of sorts, but this made me a Burton fanatic. I saw it first with my wife, and I remember thinking at the very beginning, when Danny Elfman's haunting, beautiful score was only a few notes old, that I was going to love this film. And I did. It just hit me right in the heart, in the most vulnerable, deepest part of my soul. I know that sounds pretentious, but it's the best I can do with my limited writing ability. Now understand, I was 39 years old at the time, a pipefitter/welder by trade, certainly not someone people would think of as "sensitive" or "artistic" by nature. I've been in more than my share of fistfights, ride a Harley, and love guns, power tools, and anything that explodes. But by the end of Edward Scissorhands, ... Read More

Vincent Price did not always do horror movies, but he was always a good actor and this film proves it. Price actually does not play the heavy in this film, that role falls to George Sanders who excels in a role where he deals out treachery. Price, Sanders and Margeret Lindsay all give outstanding performances. This may not be Vincent Price's best film, but it certainly ranks up there as one of his best performances. This is not a horror film, but it is a dark film that shows the impact greed can cause. The ending seems a little rushed, but it is still effective. There are no special effects and just simple sets, but the story and fantastic acting make this a great film for a wide range of viewers.
