VHS : Moonstruck
This film was destined to become a classic when it was first released, not only due to the actors who perform in it but also based upon the story content as well. It's a "feel good" movie recreating the times of our lives that either took place or were discussed around the family table. It rightly takes its place beside classic films featuring both Hepburns, Tracy, Bogie, Bacall, Stewart, etc.

I had previous owned it on VHS but not DVD and missed being able to watch it occasionally so I decided it was time to acquire it again. Most enjoyable!

This is an amusing comedy about how many neighborhoods use to be in NYC. Although there are many stereotypes, much of the characters and atmosphere rings true. People seeing this film back in the early 1990s still had many reasons to fear NYC. Having resided all my life in NYC I know what the movie is trying to show here. Many neighborhoods in Manhatten, as well as the adjacent boroughs were mostly slums in the 1970s, 80s and well into the early 90s. A variety of circumstances over the years had placed low income people into cheap housing with repacious landlords. The end result were horrific ghettos which were virtual war zones to live in.

The ironic thing today in watching this film is how we have traded in the urban ghetto for Starbucks! NYC rents were affordable ... Read More

Well before smoking was the demon it is now, this film dared to take on Big Tobacco in the historically best way possible - by laughing at it. Publicity man Merwin Wren (Bob Newhart in one of his truly classic "Angry Little Man" performances) suggests that the tobacco companies put up 25 million dollars, to be awarded to the first town that can quit smoking for 30 days. A classic false deal, Wren explains, because what town could successfully quit smoking for a full 30 days?

Eagle Rock, Iowa. Under the inspiration of Rev. Clayton Brooks (Dick Van Dyke), the town sees the offer as a way to get back on its feet, and for such a little bit of sacrifice. Yeah, right...

The town becomes a center of media interest, not to mention great consternation to the tobacco companies. What was ... Read More

VHS : Death Wish
Charles Bronson plays the role of the original vigilante, Mr. Paul Kearsey. There are many films of the 70's that tried in vain to have depth, but the social commentary that Death Wish delivers in urban violence is very thought provoking. The movie delivers in thrills and drama while Mr. Kearsey attempts to settle a score against the scum of the streets. Viewing this film only makes me realize how mush I miss Charles Bronson and how wonderful of an actor he was.

I'm at a point in my life where watching movies like this kind of goes against my nature. But that said, this is probably a better movie than a lot of people would like to admit. very quickly, these movies were made at a time when people felt helpless, and people wanted a hero like the dangerous architect.

Charles Bronson never really looks for trouble, but it has a way of finding him. Many would chalk this up as of course being required for the sequel, but there is some realism to this. (The character who doesn't look for trouble, but is often found by trouble.) The movie wastes little time. Charles visits his injured daughter (from part 1) and is trying to start his life over. He runs into some thugs, but Charles flips the tables on them. Not being too bright, the thugs decide to give Charles more trouble ... Read More

VHS : Bang the Drum Slowly
bang the drum slowly is one of the few movies that lives up to the book. deniro/moriarty. wow! this is a slice of the majors before a backup catcher was a millionaire. and a 20 game winner sells insurance on the side. the concept of "TEGWOR," (the eternal game without rules) is machiavellian by way of jocks playing cards and playing the fans. it's true to a wince. this movie is the equal of bull durham and almost matches field of dreams. a true comedy in the classic sense.

VHS : Kennedy TV Mini-Series
This is a fantastic (20th anniversary) docudrama of the highest order. Martin Sheen (as JFK), Blair Brown (as Jackie), and Vincent Gardenia (as Hoover) are amazing, as is some of the other cast (i.e. E.G. MARSHALL). The dialogue and settings are very good, ESPECIALLY for 1983-era regular tv. I even liked the Clint Hill stuntman. Get this!!

VHS : All in the Family: Archie Meets Meathead
"All In The Family" was certainly a ground-breaking TV show, and the episodes selected for this VHS video will give you a pretty good idea as to why that was true. Archie Bunker, in all his bigoted splendor, comes to life right away in the premiere episode of the series, entitled "Meet The Bunkers" (first aired in January of 1971).

In addition to that first episode, this tape also gives us another Season-One program (Episode # 8), "Lionel Moves Into The Neighborhood", and a show from Season Two, "Flashback: Mike Meets Archie" (which was the 18th episode in the series).

This 1998-produced color video from Columbia Tri-Star Home Video is presented (for some odd reason that I've yet to fathom) in "EP" (Extended Play) mode. (Well, at least the copy that I received is in EP mode; perhaps some other copies *were* recorded ... Read More

VHS : Where's Poppa
When I first saw this movie many years ago, I thought it was the funniest movie I had ever seen. How one's perceptions change with age. Two friends and I were discussing the current trends in movies and I told them about Where's Poppa and how funny it was, so we decided to have dinner and a movie together. We are all over fifty and found the movie to be embarrassing and not funny at all. We could all empathize with the son who was stuck with an aging mother but could not condone his way of deealing with her.We found the scene where the cab driver passes the black woman to pick up the guy in the gorrilla suit to be blatantly racist and fortunately it would not be allowed today. The scenes between George Segal and Tricia Van Devere are inane. It was a waste of money.
