VHS : The Egyptian
This film is fondly remembered from my childhood (Egypt was a terrific craze at the time - King Tut exhibit, Elizabeth Taylor's movie, the Mummy) and I still enjoyed it. But ... its very sexist. All Mika Waltari's (the author of the novel the script is derived form) work has a masochistic woman as the terrible, unattainable, irresistible and finally destroyed woman. Most of his novels have the woman being beaten. This one only dies of a disease (however in poverty and disgrace). So, yes, I still liked it (especially the references to Tutankhamen - see Velikovsky's analogy to the Oedipal myth) but I really look forward to the day when woman writers/directors get together to create these huge romantic epics with women who aren't either doormats for the hero or die.

I very much agree with the reviews I have read particularly from Santiago Ramos Jr from the US and wish to show some support...
COME ON WARNER BROTHERS! WHERE IS THE DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!We too in the UK are waiting to buy this film on DVD. Though I have not yet seen the film in its entirety. All the more reason to get it out on DVD. I am very much taken with this type of movie after watching many others like it with my Nan. She is no longer with us but films like this hold many memories. And its true... THEY DONT MAKE THEM LIKE THAY USE TOO!!!
In the mean time I will continue to search the net in the hope that one day I will find it.

****1/2 1947. Directed by Henry Hathaway. Richard Widmark, in his first role, earned a Golden Globe (Most promising newcomer) and an Academy award nomination, so does Eleazar Lipsky for the screenplay. Victor Mature accepts to become a snitch in order to be with his children. KISS OF DEATH is a classic film noir shot on location as often in movies produced by 20th Century Fox at that time. Classic scenes like the murder of Rizzo's mother by Widmark, the first hold-up or Richard Widmark's laugh already belong to history. Highly recommended and a valuable addition to your library.

I high recommend if you haven't, you should watch this movie it is FANTASTIC! It is truly unfortunate that I only watched it because of my Religion class. I should have watched it a long time ago. A great biblical film that tells the story of a Roman Tribune who commands the unit who crucified Jesus Christ. Richard Burton stars tribune Marcellus Gallio did a great job. Great scene when Marcellus refuses at first and then tells Peter his role in the Crucifixion. Peter understands and tells Marcellus he denied Christ three times but that Christ forgave us all from the Cross. He accepts and becomes a follower and travels with Peter and Demetrius throughout the holy land and eventually to Rome. While traveling the old Emperor Tiberius dies and Caligula becomes the new Emperor. Later while walking with Demetrius during a rainstorm ... Read More

VHS : Song of the Islands
Betty Grable is all peaches and cream and spectacular curves as she hulas her way to Hawaii. Song of the Islands also stars one of her favorite leading men, Victor Mature, one of her favorite supporting stars, Jack Oakie, and one of her favorite directors, Walter Lang. Put them all together in glorious Technicolor with plenty of songs, dances and comedy for one of Betty's biggest box office hits. Nothing serious here, folks, but musical-comedy fluff from Fox's backlot at its best. And the number one movie star of the 1940s---Betty Grable!
