VHS : Native Son (1986)
I understand the perspectives of the other online-reviewers; however, being an English teacher, I have found this video to be quite beneficial and complimentary in assisting me and helping my students to understand the characterization and themes in Native Son. It is not an outstanding performance; however, it does offer a color cinematic version, while having actors that are recongnizable to a younger generation.

I do not believe that many outstanding novels can ever really be properly and accurately portryaed on film; that is really a daunting task for directors, writers, and producers. To this date, I can only say that The Color Purple has actually achieved cinematic success, due in large part to the creative genius of Steven Spielberg. That is a rarity.

Haven't seen this movie for 30 years, and yes it's old, but still good fun. The story of a wanabe British soldier of the Raj whose sole claim to fame was that he carried water for the soldiers he so admired. Constantly reminded that he is not a soldier Gunga Din serves with enthusiasm, even when under fire and finally proves that he was the better man.
Sure the fight scenes are dated, but it's amazing what they managed to pull off without the benefit of modern technology and expertise built on the expertise of filmakers such as this.

Randal Kleiser, the director of this average melodrama, is also the man who directed the classic movie, GREASE. Hard to believe that he could go from such a high energy classic to such a low key, ultimately average thriller.
Melanie Griffith plays rather vapidly a high profile defense attorney who has just gotten city councilman John Ritter off of a rap. Earlier in her career, however, Griffith got an accused rapist, played with fearless ham by Craig Sheffer, off and found out later while in bed with him that he did rape the girl.
Tom Berenger plays Jack, Griffith's ex husband, who is also the prosecuting attorney in the murder trial of a rising rap singer who Griffith is defending.
Nina Foch chews up the scenery as the presidential hopeful's mother, and Wade Dominguez underplays the accused rap singer ... Read More

VHS : Final Shot - The Hank Gathers Story
Final Shot: The Hank Gathers Story is great made for TV movie about star that stopped shining too soon. I didn't know a lot about Hank Gathers since hey day was when I was a child. But from seeing the movie I learned a few things. Victor Love gives a great performance in the lead role and if the movie is ever on TV it's worth checking out.

I won't remember this movie in six months, but it's a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. The conspiracy theory thriller is a genre that works, so if no new ground was covered here, at least what's here works. It's fun to see Dietrich Bader of Drew Carey and Whose Line Is It Anyway in a straight role, and Sherilyn Fenn acquits herself well. I'm not sorry I watched it.

VHS : Sonic the Hedgehog - Super Sonic
This Sonic video is one of the best! That's right, Sonic fans! DIC Home Entertainment isn't going out of style! First, in Super Sonic, Sonic heads to Lazar's lair in an attempt to get his computer of magic spells. Unfortunately, Robotnik gets there first and steals the computer and uses it to brainwash Sally and Bunnie. Meanwhile, Sonic makes it to Lazar's lair. Lazar blames Sonic for stealing his computer and captures him in a forcefield. Eventually, Sonic convinces Lazar to let him go and that he'll get his computer back, but he'll have to do it without his speed. Then, in Sonic and Sally, Sally gets captured by SWATbots and Robotnik creates a duplicate of Sally to locate Knothole. Everyone believes it's the real Sally except Tails who sees that it's a fake because she won't do the funny kiss nor the scary witch voice. I noticed ... Read More

VHS : Ceres, Celestial Legend - Past Unfound (Vol. 2)
When we left off last volume, Aya had just transformed into Ceres, the celestial being, after her mother tried to kill her. The mysterious red-haired Toya has also shown up to capture her, even though he seems to have feelings for Aya. Ceres swears to destroy the Mikage family, which includes Aki, Aya's brother, who just happens to be the reincarnation of the man that stole her celestial robe, which kept her from returning to Heaven. Unfortunately, the brother that she loves can do nothing to help Aya's personality reemerge, because Ceres' hate is so strong. It's up to Yuhi to change her back to Aya, and he does so by kissing her! The main villain, Aya's cousin, begins to assert himself in this volume. He wants to harness the power of Ceres for a secret project and is willing to harm Aya to get to Ceres.

VHS : It's My Party
Actually, it may have done it way before that. I don't like to give negative reviews but this movie is out of control. Somebody should have reigned these folks in, or, well, put a stop to it. Even on paper it just sounds insulting to the gay community and to AIDS victims. See, movies like Longtime Companion and Torch Song Trilogy were great and moving films. They also worked well because the casts were relatively unknown and were actually "acting", - playing roles. To create a big "party" of well known B (C or D) performers/actors just makes the entire premise silly and overbearing.

I guess the idea of Marlee Matlin and Margaret Cho came from someone who realized that each gay man has an asian girlfriend and a deaf girlfriend. I guess Cho is a good example of why this whole thing is so over the top. Wouldn't this be ... Read More
