VHS : Gone with the Wind
This is the 716th review of this movie! What can I say that has not already been said about this wonderfully compelling movie? I will not comment on the restoration process or the pros and cons of buying the 2-disk or 4-disk set, as this is adequately discussed by many other reviewers. I will say that this movie won 10 Academy awards and is still regarded as the 6th best epic movie of all-time. That should be credentials enough to want to view this extraordinary movie.

Watching this movie is an absolutely delightful experience, and I can just imagine attending the movie in the theatre for the first time! I can just imagine the excitement and the buzz of conversation during the intermission, for the first half of this movie is quite unlike any other movie up to that date ... Read More

VHS : Charlie Chan in Rio
1941's "Charlie Chan in Rio" is a solid mystery thriller in the Charlie Chan movie series, featuring Sidney Toler as the famous Honolulu Detective, here assisted by Sen Yung as enthusiastic Number Two Son Jimmy.

The story opens with some exterior shots of Rio and proceeds to the floor show of a Brazilian nightclub. Charlie Chan and his son are present, along with the local Chief of Police, to arrest Lola Dean, a singer in the nightclub, for murder. We are quickly introduced to the cast of people who will figure in the story. Lola Dean leaves the nightclub after being proposed to by her boyfriend. Her brief stop at the home of a Indian mystic brings an involuntary confession under drugs to the murder Charlie Chan is investigating. By the time Miss Dean reaches her home, she ... Read More

Anyone who has been to Egypt immediately recognizes the authenticity of this movie's location shooting, which uses real places throughout to present a nearly perfect 1954 travelogue of the Nile Valley civilization. Especially interesting are the scenes at Abu Simbel and Philae, both of which were moved after the film was shot to higher ground, at new locations that are less authentic and dramatic. Great landmarks are shown here before they were taken apart and placed in modern settings that spoiled the mystery and wonder of these ancient monuments. The original location of Abu Simbel (before the Aswan Dam required its dismantling and removal to an articifical hill built high above the rising waters of Lake Nasser) reveals how phony the new site looks today, with the statues scarred with slice marks and ... If you like adventure movies, if you like movies that are excellently casted, if you like to root for the underdog... this movie is for you. In fact, if you are a living, breathing human being, this movie is for you. It is a wonderfully acted intriguing story... and is or should be in the ranks of must see movies like Casablanca or Seven Samurai. Do yourself a favor and at least rent this!

VHS : Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Everyone knows Mark Twain's story of Tom Sawyer. Just the mention of the name conjures up images of whitewashed fences, Indians, and treasure. Tommy Kelly plays Tom in this David O. Selznik Technicolor classic. A mischievious boy at heart, he causes commotion in the town when he runs away to play pirates, and returns to find that he has been assumed dead. When he reveals himself, he does not stay out of trouble for very long. He and Huckleberry Finn (Jackie Moran) become involved in a murder trial. After that, Tom and girlfriend Becky Thatcher (Ann Gillis) find themselves lost in the caves nearby.

The child stars are surprisingly unimpressive. Their antics seem natural enough, but Kelly nor Gillis have enough charm or spunk to cement themselves in the memory. The film is also uneven; the most exciting parts ... Read More

Well, there's good cheese and there's bad cheese--this was Cheeze Whiz. Sitting through it was an ordeal. The intent may have been good--i.e., John Ford's "apology" to the Indians--but other than that it was one bad Hollywood cliche after another. Richard Widmark, who can't act to save his life, plays a sort of prototype Oskar Schindler who risks his army career to go to bat for the Indians. Karl Malden plays a Prussian authoritarian sociopath, an easy villain. The Cheyenne themselves might have been humanized here if their leaders hadn't been played by stodgy, middle-aged white men with pointy noses and mall bangs. Ricardo Montalban is in mediocre form as usual, and Sal Mineo is, also as usual, an Italian-American version of Elvis. The only Indians with any dignity are the extras, who appear to be real Indians but probably ... Read More
