VHS : Men in War
Dealing with a topic the war movie and western genres have often covered, the lost patrol/squad/unit, Men in War doesn't do anything spectacular but does everything really solid as director Anthony Mann delivers a hard-hitting, tense war movie. Following a disastrous North Korean attack that produces hundreds of American casualties, the sun rises on the remnant of Lt. Benson's platoon. Not knowing where battalion is or if headquarters has been wiped out or even where the lines are, the platoon begins the 17-mile march to their original objective, Hill 465. Along the way, they come across a sergeant transporting his shell-shocked colonel to an aide station, something A Bridge Too Far would do 20 years later. On the march, the platoon tangles with snipers, minefields, hidden artillery posts, ... Read More

i give this fine mini-series 4 stars because this one was used to set up the rest of the series but for reasons unknown they stoped after this one.
philip kent is now an old man(and now played by martin millner)and his son's are now the focus of the series. randolph mantooth is quite good as the oldest son who must do things for himself.his trek west with wife and new child is the focus of the first part and we get to see how hard the way really was and leaves us with very powerful images of the life and death daily life of our andercesters. the second part follows kent's two grandchildren as they fight for their part of the american dream. very well done, and i hope to see the other books turned into mini-series someday.

VHS : Humanoids From Deep
Noticeably taking several cues from big budget horror films, Humanoids from the Deep still manages to create an enjoyable atmosphere and a few unique thrills to retain an air of originality. Combining an infinitely absurd plot with serious actors, decent gore effects, gratuitous nudity, and a pervasive foreboding score from James Horner culminates in a low budget horror flick that nearly breaks free of such impediments to offer plenty of scares and laughs, mostly in that order.

In this Roger Corman produced monster movie, a small coastal village finds themselves facing a deadly invasion when DNA testing on local sea life causes mutated amphibious monstrosities to rise from the waters and begin preying on the villagers - and attempting to mate with human women.

Im not going to tell you all about this film, or tell you who is in it, or what they did, etc. Everyone knows Walter Matthau plays an ex-ball player who drinks, smokes and swears to much thru the movie, and also that Tatum O'Neil plays his ex-girlfriend's daughter who he gets to pitch and all the other stuff, like Tanner swearing and saying the "N" word, and such. All this has been said and reviewed in earlier post. I saw this movie when it first came out in 1976. I was 9 turning 10 years old that year. I cant believe its been 32 years now. WOW! Im gettin old. I believe that this movie is a time capsule. Its an era and time, long gone by. Sure, there is little league baseball today, but its not the same as it was back then. People who were kids back then (like me) can tell you that the whole scene was different ... Read More

VHS : God's Little Acre
Released in 1958, Anthony Mann's God's Little Acre caused a scandal in theaters and was even banned in many places. Now 50 years later, the DVD format lets viewers see what they may have missed. In 1930s rural Georgia, Ty Ty Walden and his family live on a farm, barely scraping by. Ty Ty was told by his great grandfather there's gold buried on the farm, and he's convinced it's still there. Helped out by his sons, he's been digging for 15 years without luck. The gold story serves as a jumping off point for the rest of the story, the relationships and dynamics of Ty Ty's family. Directed by Anthony Mann, this is a beautifully shot movie, in more ways than one, as the story of the Walden family develops. The relationships are real, the love and hot believable as Ty Ty tries to find the gold while also continuing ... Read More

That gorgeous smile shows up in the first scene. The black and white movie opens with fabulous footage of New Orleans' French Quarter in the '50s, with vendors singing of their produce. A woman on a mule-drawn cart sings "Crawfish," and Elvis leans out a balcony window and joins in her song. As he sings, he ducks back inside and is viewed only through the sheer curtains, tantalizing his fans until the viewer is allowed into the apartment.

Elvis's favorite movie of his is mine, too. Good jazzy songs, good story, and yes, good acting by the young, trim Elvis. His lines were delivered without rushing them the way he did in other movies, and with an appropriate amount of emotion.

A few of the lines from the two needy women who loved him were a little melodramatic, but that can be overlooked, it's all ... Read More

VHS : Twilight Zone
TWILIGHT ZONE - THE MOVIE made headlines long before it opened when actor Vic Morrow and two Asian child actors were killed in a horrific accident during filming.

The scandal, the trial, and the resulting publicity cast a dark shadow on what is otherwise a harmlessly sentimental trip into the Twilight Zone.

The opening with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks is pure John Landis, more of the same laugh/fright effect that worked so well in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. But Landis' contribution to the tales, an original story not from the Zone canon, isn't up to Rod Serling standards. The comeuppance of bigot Vic Morrow get repititious and--honestly--problematic when you consider that the US soldier is lumped with the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

Spielberg's choice is the lamest: cute elderly ... Read More

There are some who will try to tell you that this movie "The Evictors" is a sequel to "Town That Dreaded Sundown" do NOT let them fool you with that "Evictors" is in no way related to the case at all of "Sundown" and is not a sequel. My mother grew up during the time "Sundown" took place and remembers it very clearly. "Evictors" is supposed to be based on a true story that happened in a whole other state and of difference circumstances.
