VHS : The Bride of Frankenstein
I JUST WATCHED "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN" FOR THE FIRST TIME (73 YEARS AFTER ITS MAKING). WHILE MOVIE MAKING HAS OBVIOUSLY TRAVELED LIGHT YEARS FROM THE TECHNIQUES USED IS THIS FILM, IT IS STILL A TRUE CLASSIC IN HORROR FILMDOM.
ASIDE FROM JUST A FEW OUT OF FOCUS SHOTS LEFT IN THE FILM, SUCH AS THE TOUCHING OF HANDS IN THE "REBUFFED" SCENE, THIS IS STILL A CREEPY AND RATHER SCARY FILM THAT IS TRULY TIMELESS.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO SEE A LITTLE MORE OF THE BRIDE..BUT MAYBE THE BEST WAS TRULY SAVED FOR THE END THIS TIME.
I COULDN'T HELP BUT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BIG FELLA AS HE TRIED AND TRIED TO BEFRIEND MANY HE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A 7 FOOT SQUARE HEADED MAN-CREATURE HAPPENED UPON YOU?
THIS IS A GREAT FILM. I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS ... Read More

VHS : Great Expectations
First, a word of warning to the modern viewer: If you are the type of viewer who cannot stand the overacting, dramatically altered 'Hollywood' ending, and absurdly ostentatious soundtrack score inherent to any film released in the 1940s, you may choose to look elsewhere for an adaptation of Dickens.

If, however, you are able to accept the limitations and imperfections of the decade in which this was created, you will see a beautifully filmed masterpiece. Some of the camera work in this work is incredible. The director shows a sensitivity to setting and mood unparalleled in any other adaptation of 'Great Expectations'. Even some of the acting is brilliant, especially Alec Guiness's role as Herbert Pocket.

Diehard fans of Dickens, especially those familiar with the controversy ... Read More

VHS : Kind Hearts & Coronets
The English seem to have a gift for "black comedy"--and nowhere is that gift on better display than in the 1949 KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, a film that finds Alec Guiness playing eight members of the D'Ascoyne family and Dennis Price as the black sheep of the family who is determined to kill his way through them to both avenge his mother and obtain the title Duke of Chalfont.

The film is often described as "droll," and indeed the word might have been invented with this movie in mind. The story and body count are presented in an ironically "stiff upper lip" manner, the cast playing the outrageous situations in a remarkably matter-of-fact manner. The entire cast is flawless. Valerie Hobson as the meticulous, ultra-stereotypical English lady; Joan Greenwood, whose disgracefully sexy voice and languid ... Read More

During the early Forties the British perfected a classic type of anti-Nazi movie. The films featured sophisticated, intelligent heroes, upper-class heroines, witty dialogue, tense situations, clever escapes and, most of all, the portrayal of Nazis as bestial and stupid. The Nazis may have the upper-hand now, the movies said, but the steadfastness, courage and intelligence of free men will ultimately prevail. A good many of these movies are still enjoyable because of this style. The Adventures of Tartu almost makes it into the top rank.

In a bombed-out hospital in the heart of London, fireman discover an unexploded German bomb. Confined in a bed teetering over the crater is a small boy in casts and traction. He cannot be moved. With him is a brave nurse, determined not to leave her patient. Then Captain Terrence ... Read More

VHS : Werewolf of London
This is an interesting werewolf story which plays more like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Henry Hull's werewolf is no match for Lon Chaney Jr.'s but, it's not his fault. At the time they made this film, Universal was apprehensive about showing a wolfman that was "too Hairy" and the actual wolfman transformation. I have read that Jack Pierce had designed a more elaborate make-up but the studio opted against it. The folklore is not the same as the 1941 classic either and this film takes a more scientific approach. It's a fun film filled with great sets, atmosphere and an early Jack Pierce make-up. I am reviewing this film here because it is available on DVD on the Wolfman Legacy Collection with 3 other werewolf related films and a some interesting extras.

It's always hard to review a spy movie without giving away some of the twists and turns, but Amazon's own editorial - "From the back Cover" gives away a big spoiler, and I'm glad I hadn't read it before seeing the movie !

This movie is actually available on DVD in Australia, though there are no special features and the print is quite scratchy with a few clumsy editing cuts.

I could also swear that some of the actors' lines have been revoiced, though this is not really a big issue for such an old movie.

Certain parts of the movie have a flurry of fast-cuts, enough to rival your average MTV music clip.

Other reviewers have covered the plot well enough, so I'll just say that the first half is an interesting, fast-paced, intricately plotted spy yarn.

Unfortunately ... Read More

Not a P&P masterpiece (it looks very low budget in places and the acting but some of the minor characters is a bit ropey) but still an entertaining sub-Hitchcockian spy thriller making great use of the London Blackout as a plot device.

If you like P&P movies it's a must have.
