VHS : Jesus of Nazareth (3pc)
This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

I had to watch this movie in three different intervals because the movie was so boring. It was anticipating that this movie would answer some of my questions as to how Saints interact with God and why Saints feel they need to suffer to embrace the love of God. Since the movie was such a letdown, I drove over to my Library and checked out the Relectant Saint The Life of Francis if Assisi. The book is far more informative and paints a more realistic picture of St Francis. It's strange how Hollywood can make such a mess out of something so beautiful.

VHS : Malaya
With James Stewart and Spencer Tracy starring together, "Malaya" seemed a good bet to be a movie worth seeing. It is a rather decent movie for its' time but there were some issues I had with its' factual content. I mention that because the movie does a good job of dealing with an actual issue that existed during the war; the shortage of raw rubber. If I'm not mistaken, the need for other habitats for the rubber plant (Brazil) and the development (out of necessity) for synthetic rubber, led to the eventual demise of the Southeast Asian rubber market. However, that came later and, at the outset of WWII, Japanese control of the rubber producing area caused a critical shortage for the US and its' Allies.

The objection I had with "Malaya" was the cosy relationship that existed in the Malayan ... Read More

VHS : When Time Ran Out
Trouble's brewing on a tropical isle: Oilman Paul Newman has just struck oil, but what's that funny smell? Turns out the island's long-dormant volcano is about to blow. When it does, half of the folks stay at the hotel (read: Lava Target Cental) while Newman takes a small band across the island to a safe spot. Will they make it?

This movie is just terrible in every respect. Clearly, producer Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno) had lost his creative spark by 1980 when this was made. The cast is full of top-notch actors (Newman and William Holden among them) but the script and the direction are abysmal. The sound is poor and background noises often overwhelm the voices which sound tinny. The actors spend all their time looking staring blankly at each other while ... Read More

VHS : Assassination of Trotsky
joseph losey directed richard burton in this bizarre apologia for one of the 20th centurys biggest losers: a man who manages to be held in contempt by both the left and the right. it would be acceptable if anything about the movie were not the height of amateurishness, but thats not the case. trotsky lived with my great grandparents family in new york in the years before the russian revolution; if he was as obnoxious a boarder as this is a film, i hope they overcharged him for the rent!

This is a wonderful love letter to the movies from Francois Truffaut who not only directs but also delivers a terrific performance as a movie director. Truffaut's character is directing what seems to be a fairly banal love triangle story. The very first scene is magical. We see a Paris street with a cafe, a square, people walking their dogs, chatting, cars driving by -- the camera picks up a couple of the characters and you wonder who the film will be about. Then someone shouts "cut" and we realize that this is a movie scene in which every tiny detail has been orchestrated. They play the scene again, but this time we hear the director's instructions and see the cameras moving around.
The director has to manage all kinds of personal dramas on his set -- the aging actress soused on wine who can no longer ... Read More

8.Juliet of the Spirits starring: Giulietta Masina, Sandra Milo, Mario Pisu, Valentina Cortese, Valeska Gert

VHS : Juliet of the Spirits
Federico Fellini's first color film, 1965's Juliet Of The Spirits (Giulietta Degli Spiriti), which was written by Fellini and longtime collaborators Tullio Pinelli, Ennio Flaiano, and Brunello Rondi, is, simply put, the female and color companion piece to 8½. Unlike that prior film, often considered Fellini's best, Juliet Of The Spirits was a critical and financial failure when it came out. The criticism of the film was too harsh for, while it is not as great nor good a film as some earlier Fellini classics, it is still Fellini, which makes it better than the overwhelming majority of films by others, for even when Fellini fails he succeeds at more things than most. However, like many of the first color films made by directors who started in black and white, Fellini seems to overdose on the new medium, with color schemes that ... Read More

VHS : The Girl Who Knew Too Much
This movie may seem funny and naive nowdays but just because we've seen too much since 1964.
This is a perfect example of giallo genre, more to it - this film was made on the dawn of giallo genre. There are many things that would be imitated later on in many other popular movies, not only in Italy but all over the world. The story is rather simple as in all giallo films and I would say even plain. Acting is a little hyperbolic as it was usually 40 years ago - theater-like. But the first impression you get after watching is that it reminds of early Hitchcock works. I think we can easily call Mario Bava an "Italian Hitchcock".
If you're looking for a thrill or a scare - you won't find it here 'cos I repeat the movie is rather naive. I think it looked good in 1964 but for our times it's too unsophisticated. But if you like old ... Read More
