VHS : Batman & Robin
In the original "Batman" & "Batman Returns," the storylines (or what shreds there were) were overwhelmed by the comic-book schtick left over from the wonderful 1960's "Batman" series. The schtick was fine for the series, but for the films...AUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. GOOD GRIEF! In "Batman Forever," Akiva Goldsman took over the screenwriting duties and the schtick was eliminated, giving way to a firmly grounded storyline. The same with its excellent follow-up "Batman & Robin" (which I fail to see why it performed badly at the box office). Sadly, the franchise went into hibernation after this great film. There was only one thing missing (for which I would've given it 4/1/2 stars, but I decided on giving it the full 5, since this site doesn't allow reviewers to give half-star ... Read More

VHS : Beautiful Girls
Beautiful Girls is an ensemble comedy, with star power to burn. Hutton and Sorvino are both Oscar winners, while Dillon Thurman, and Portman have Oscar nominations. The title of this movie, Beautiful Girls, should clue you in to what it's about. It is a celebration of the beauty of women, but at the same time, it is also a cautionary tale about how men put Beauty on a pedestal that sometimes interferes with them making a commitment to a mature adult relationship with a real woman. In spite of the stellar cast and lofty premise, it probably went straight to DVD. I have no recollection of this movie being released theatrically. I thought that because of this it would be a big stinker, but it was actually quite good. I have a few theories about why it performed so poorly at the box office:

It ... Read More

VHS : Les Miserables (1998)
I never cease to be touched by this film; it's one of the few movies I can call "powerful" without being overdramatic.

The story centers on Jean Valjean, a convict -- how his life was transformed by the action of a selfless clergyman, and how his own life transforms those around him. It is very much a story about hope, the rarity and value of selflessness and true love and how it transforms the soul more readily than punishment, and the salvation of the human condition.

The first act always makes me cry. It's one of the most powerful moments in a movie for me -- more of a spectacle than all the battle scenes ever filmed. When those police drag Jean back to the bishop and toss him down at his feet, and that precious man hands Jean the silver candlesticks, I always expect for that shocked ... Read More

VHS : Dangerous Liaisons
Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this classic film. All three stars bring excitement, strength, and charmisa to their roles. Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman also star as supporting and naive characters. Close is no stranger to playing an unappealing dame. I like this film but the language and costumes are too distracting to fully enjoy this old-fashioned film.

VHS : Henry & June
Erotic, shocking and dramatic would be the three words to describe this film. Maria de Medeiros is perfect as the young writter and so was Fred Ward in the role of 'Henry', excellent chemistry between both the fine artists. Uma's appearence may have been brief but she does deliver a sattisfying performence, beautifull settings, locations of Paris. Definately worth a watch.

Half an hour into the movie, I honestly was bored to tears and nearly cringed at this entire film. The only thing that's good about this film is the visuals, but flashy visuals don't mean anything if there's not a story. After just 20 minutes I got tired of watching the actors do nothing more but turn up their noses in snobbery and trying to acquire a French accent, which is not the least bit natural or believable. And Uma Thurman is absolutely boring and lackluster. In general, Vatel was boring. Even if there was an actual story, i wouldn't even care to know.

VHS : Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
Uma Thurman is not a very good actress. She's tall, & reasonably attractive, & sometimes blonde, but she was the poster-girl for the Uber-hip set in the late 80's/early 90's so for that set, she was a perfect choice as Sissy Hankshaw. Having read & loved this book, I knew she was not a good choice, and she was subsequently was named Worst Actress of 1993 for her terrible attempt to portray Cissy. Likewise, Rain aka Rain- bow aka Rain Phoenix was also miscast, as well as not being talented enough to pull off the role of Boss Cowgirl Bonanza Jellybean. She seemed to be attempting to read off a Teleprompter, or maybe she should have been. Did I detect her lips moving before she attempted to deliver her lines? The reason she was not named Worst Actress of 1993 was that to win that award, she had to be an actress, which she clearly ... Read More

VHS : Gattaca
Gattaca is a superb motion picture, less science-fiction or political commentary than a compelling invitation to ponder old social metaphors in new ways.

On the surface, Gattaca is visually stunning, emotionally evocative, and yet subtle -- a mix of whodunit and drama that asks viewers to think about a range of current social issues, such as the social obsession with physical perfection; the allure that some people find in a super-race; injustices in the health-insurance industry; and efforts by privileged elites to withdraw freedoms and opportunities from minorities.

Beneath the surface, the film prompts viewers to ask more basic questions:

In what ways might I be an outcast?

What is the meaning of true brotherhood?

How might family members crush sons and siblings beneath lowered ... Read More

A good simple "escape" film. I have always found the photography on deserted London streets (or English country roads) intriguing.
