VHS : The Firm - Firm Basics: Sculpting With Weights
Tracie Long is a great instructor, always demonstrating proper form, and is easy to follow. I use the "Firm Basics" series along with Leslie Sansone to get started exercising again after being inactive for a while. This tape is for beginners, and those who find the new "Firm" workouts beyond their capabilties. A great start to better fitnes.
This series is not produced on DVD. It would be great if it was.

VHS : FitPrime Volume 6: Strong Bear with Tracie Long
Strong Bear is from the original FitPrime series by Anna Benson, co-creator of The Firm workouts. The videos in this series are known for their blend of exercise components (cardio, weights, and yoga), their often-quirky moves, and their relatively poor production values (more on this below). In general, I really like the FitPrime workouts, as I find them to be fun and different, so I decided to give Strong Bear a try. For this full-body weighted workout, you will need a tall box/high step and several sets of dumbbells; a balance dowel and ankle weights are optional.

Strong Bear is led by Tracie Long, who later went on to create her own video series (borrowing both some of the moves and some of the music found here). Tracie is an excellent, no-nonsense instructor, and I found her to be even ... Read More

VHS : FitPrime Volume 7: Fast Cheetah with Tracie Long
This is the third video I've tried from the old FitPrime series, but it's the first that was a mainly cardio focus. I've found the FitPrime workouts to be quite quirky, but I think that's what I like about them. In particular, I appreciate the variety of unique moves combined with simple choreography and an overall great workout.

The Fast Cheetah DVD is very well-chaptered as listed below. I've added my own brief descriptions of each segment as well as approximate times.

1. Step Climb, 3.5 minutes. This warm-up uses the tall box for slow step-ups/overs, nicely warming up the lower body and beginning to get the heart rate up.
2. Warrior, 2 minutes. This brief stretch incorporates warrior pose from yoga.
3. Ball Toss, 2.5 minutes. Here Tracie uses a medicine ball to "play": she ... Read More

VHS : Core Foundations with Jeanne Anne
This workout is about 45 minutes long and not one minute is wasted. Jeanne Anne Copleston (or "JAC" as she's known on the web) gives a very brief intro, and then you jump right into the warmup, then stretch. Even the last two tunes, which were roughly the cooldown and stretch, still have more "work" than other workouts- don't skip these thinking they're a waste of time. There are about fifteen segments, and each of them is about three minutes long.

This workout uses what I call "the Pilates school of thought": you do many different exercises, but only a few reps of each. And because of the almost constant stability challenge (if you're not on the ball, you're probably lifting one leg, whether you're standing up or lying down), it's plenty. Many of the moves are very tough and will take a while for most ... Read More

All right, first off the positives-

-Creative moves and work out.
I love how different this work out feels. It uses a stability ball, low step, med ball, and weights. It uses them all in a creative way with lots of balance work, so it makes you feel like you are lifting more than the 8 pounds it calls for as your heavy weights. It's a nice work out to change things up if you are tired of The Firm, or the repetition of other work outs.

-Pikes?
I LOVE the core work in this. The pikes and drawing your legs in on the ball is a challenge but I think its fun.

-Intense cardio
I might be a wimp, but I do work out 6 to 7 times a week, but I find this to be the hardest cardio video I own. I'm HEAVING after the step routine in the middle with the med ball. I sweat buckets, and am ... Read More

VHS : Dynamic Strength & Power with Cindy Thorp
I was a little nervous about trying this video, as I had heard rumors that it was one of the hardest workouts ever. It was released by Tracie Long's former company, Tracie Long Productions, and it was instructed my Cindy Thorp, who also appears as a background exerciser in one of the newer Tracie Long Training videos (Strength in Movement). This is a mostly cardio workout that uses a low step, light weights, and a medicine ball (ideally, one that is able to roll easily). I've tried the workout with both the top (6") and bottom (8") portion of my Firm Fanny Lifter; both worked, although the higher step made some of the double-footed jumps impossible for me. I started off with 3# dumbbells but had no problems moving up to 5# my second time through the workout, and I used a 4# medicine ball. Finally, this is a functional fitness ... Read More
