VHS : Red Sun
We just saw this movie on TV and while it probably deserved the 2 stars the TV rating gave it, we had a ball watching it. This movie has it all! Cowboys, Indians, Train Robberies, Mexican Missions, Prostitutes, Gushing Fake Blood, and Samurai. What more could you ask for in a Western.

2.Shogun (2 Hour Feature) starring: Richard Chamberlain, Toshirô Mifune, Yôko Shimada, Frankie Sakai, Alan Badel
directed by: Jerry London

VHS : Shogun (2 Hour Feature)
Shogun is one of the best adaptations of a literary bestseller to the small screen. Superb acting, great scenery and great suspense story.
Too bad that one of the 5 discs is flawed. The picture stalls and there is no way to continue watching unless the skip button is used causing that a considerable part of the film is not possible to view.

VHS : Yojimbo
Yojimbo is Kurosawa's most popular movie both at home and in the West & it is easy to see why. First and foremost, it's just fun. Combining cool, dry wit, black humor and rousing action; even those who don't "get" the mocking of Westerns or Samurai movies will find plenty to enjoy. Shorter than Ran and Seven Samurai, more accessible than Rashomon or Throne of Blood and more exciting than Ikiru or Red Beard. Yojimbo isn't a masterpiece, though Toshiro Mifune gives an incredible performance. Yojimbo has such a relaxed, sardonic tone to it, I don't think Kurosawa was trying for masterpiece.

As nearly always with Kurosawa, there is, just beneath the easy to follow story, a clever subtext. Kurosawa was one of the few directors who was able to entertain casual filmgoers and the ... Read More

VHS : Seven Samurai
This is the story of seven samurai who stood up for the forsaken and abandoned souls of society. They risked their lives for these peasants against a band of bandits. They didn't fight for money, glory, or legacy. They fought because it was the right thing to do...

This is the masterpiece that all epics are measured by.

VHS : Midway
This is the only movie about the epic battle of Midway which means that its the one that you'll have to watch to get any taste about this incredible pivotal turning point in the war in the Pacific. What can I say?

*You get some great performances from excellent actors like Henry Fonda.
*There's a melodramatic father and son plot between Heston and a young Edward Arnold over his Japanese girlfriend.
*Historical figures are played by up and coming or known actors.
*A documentary type feel for both the Japanese and American timelines which works to some extent.
*A pastiche of footage from other sources which the filmakers used to 'fill in the gaps' in the plot with an acceptable but sometimes inauthentic feel. You've seen this footage in other movies.

I've always wanted to remake ... Read More

VHS : Throne of Blood
Akira Kurosawa's black and white 1957 film Throne of Blood (Kumonosu Jô- literally Spider-Web's Castle) is a very good film, but not quite up there with the best of his films, like Seven Samurai, Ikiru, nor The Bad Sleep Well, despite its vaunted adaptation from Shakespeare's Macbeth. That said, the hour and forty nine minute long film, written by Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, and Ryuzo Kikushima, features one of the best performances by its star, longtime Kurosawa leading man Toshirô Mifune as Taketori Washizu, the warrior who has the Macbeth role. Yet, in watching this film, I have come to the conclusion that while there is a minor influence from Macbeth, it is in no way merely a Japanized version of the Bard's play. There are just too many significant differences, as well as the clear power and influence of the Noh Theater on this ... Read More

Great movie from the sixties, I remember vaguely some of the highlights but now I was able to relive it. I am very pleased.

VHS : Hell in the Pacific
Two enemies are trapped on a island together! There are only two actors in this film but it is one of my top films for Japan WW2. By using the subtitles you will understand the Japanese dialogue. This movie keeps you glued to the screen until the last moment. The ending is sudden and I didn't think it fit until I watched it again. There is also a Alternate Ending on the DVD.
