VHS : Fiddler on the Roof
I'd never seen this before getting the DVD, or at least never seen the entire film. I knew all the songs already, and my husband says we saw it as a play, but if we did, a lot of stuff was cut out.

Milkman Tevye (Topol), his wife, and five (!) daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. I remember my parents going to see this at the theater, probably back in 1971, when it was released, and listening to my mom and some of her friends swooning over Topol. I have to say, I can see their point. It's not the appearance, it's the character.

One by one, his older daughters buck tradition and choose their own husbands by falling in love: a penniless tailor, a revolutionary teacher, and a local, non-Jewish Russian boy. And despite his bluster at not being obeyed as the head of ... Read More

VHS : Bond: For Your Eyes Only
I just watched this movie for the first time and didn't see the Moore films as they came out, so my opinion isn't colored by nostalgia or affection for Roger Moore. In fact, I had only started watching the classic Bond films a few years ago.

I've always been a bit lukewarm to Moore's portrayal of 007 as he seemed a bit overly formal and stiff when compared to the graceful yet rugged qualities of Sean Connery and more recently, Daniel Craig. However, most of the reviews from Bond fans I've read seemed to indicate that this film and the Spy Who Loved Me were the two best Moore films; with people citing FYEO as having the "back to basics" approach to the franchise with Ian Fleming style espionage at the forefront.

While it compares favorably to the rest of the Moore films, ... Read More

VHS : Flash Gordon
Maybe I could have understood the movie better if I wasn't having so much fun watching it! Why are Sam and Dale stuck out in the universe instead of going back to earth? Well, I'd stay out in space if the alternative was the dreary, dust-ridden planet we get a glimpse of at the beginning of the film. The movie picks up steam and color as soon as Dr. Zharkov kidnaps our hero and heroine and whisks them off to save the planet, and especially when they reach the court of the fabulous Ming the Merciless. Ridiculed for its "camp" qualities when it came out, and for the inadequate and dubbed acting of Sam J. Jones as "Flash," FLASH GORDON in fact tells its story in a relatively straightforward manner, while Jones is unexpectedly winning in a difficult role; as soon as he remembers his football plays in a push against ... I think this is one of the funniest spoofs on westerns I've ever seen. It's a laugh out loud movie but probably would not appeal to youngsters whose idea of westerns is Starwars. This "senior" folk likes it a lot.

I am thoroughly happy with the purchase of Winds of War and War & Rememberance. These are fantastic movies. It brings you into the war and makes you part of it. The stories were linked together so you really needed to have both of these great movies. Buying from Amazon has been the best for me and I will continue to make purchases with them. AL

This powerfully emotional film from director/co-star Jeroen Krabbé works and sticks with you, despite some fundamental quirks. You've got to swallow the idea that we're set in Antwerp with the Scottish actress Laura Fraser as the lead, all set in English. We just saw I've Loved You So Long [Blu-ray] and the filmmakers there take the pains to write an explanation for Kristin Scott Thomas' English accent (the film's in French) into the script. Here, we get an inexplicable mixture of people and languages in this environment, yet no reason for it. [I'm reminded of Smilla's Sense of Snow, where Julia Ormond is supposed to be Danish...and Robert Loggia as her father, no less.]

Again, despite those comments, this is a powerful film not to be missed. It has one particular moment of such overwhelming, perfectly ... Read More
