VHS : Jesus of Nazareth (3pc)
This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

Neither fans nor detractors seem to have a clue what this movie is about. The best window on the theme is Tierney's statement. Everyone does deals, gives and takes favors. That's not a lamentable fact of urban life. It's the reality for social creatures. That's enobling and tragic, and all of Sayles characters are in it. All except the autistic guy, who can only parrot another's cry for help. A brilliant explication of a fundamental truth of human existence.

"Friends and Family"

Laughs for All

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Friends and Family" is like a breeze on a hot summer day. It is one of those comedies like they used to make with plenty of laughs for laughs sake alone. The story is about a gay couple who are hit men for the Mafia. A situation like this leaves the field open for jokes about stereotypes but that is not what we have. Instead there are plotlines that are crazy and fun and are intertwined in plotlines that are chock full of wit and good jokes. In fact, the movie eschews stereotypes while using camp humor to the utmost.
This is by no means a great film but it is an entertainment and good characterization. Tovah Feldshuh gives a great performance and I have always loved her. It is good to see her ... Read More

VHS : Ann Jillian Story
THE ANN JILLIAN STORY is a must-own for all fans of the brilliant, beautiful singer/actress. Miss Jillian plays herself in this well-crafted 1988 TV movie about her struggles with breast cancer and her marriage.

The film opens in the 1970's. Ann is virtually a has-been and trying to get herself back onto the world stage. In Chicago while touring as a singer, she falls in love with vice cop Andy (Tony Lo Bianco). He becomes her manager and they later marry. Ann's star rises when she gets a role in the national tour of SUGAR BABIES, and later the pair move to Los Angeles with her parents.

In 1985, just as she is preparing to play the Red Queen in the lavish 2-part TV musical of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, she discovers a lump in her breast. Soon the lump starts growing and she has to undergo ... Read More

This film picks up more of a cult interest, due to the Viggo Mortenson factor and a couple of other interesting things going on. The scriptwriter should have waited until "Heat" came out before offering this up as a tension builder. The way the scenes went back and forth from crook to cop was interesting in a satirical way.Pulling Valerie Perrine out of retirement was another surprse cameo. The noir attempt did not work on anyone who knew Newark from LA. Dennis Hopper was too wrapped up in the 40's, making you think he was going "Back to Future" on us here. The explosion expected, the one where Viggo outwits Hopper, does not happen, or vice versa. Instead they stop the action and shut down with a lame ending to a promising caper flick. The dangerous charm of Viggo burns into your memory. A Michael Mann would take this flat ... Read More

Set in summer, 1933, in the depths of the Depression, Arthur Miller's most personal and intimate play focuses on the workers in a warehouse, a grim place in which men and women work for small wages and are grateful for the work. Appearing at the beginning of this production to set the scene, Miller observes that the Civil War and the Depression were the only times in American history in which the whole country was in the same boat-"You could not do a single thing that you wanted to do because no one had any money." The warehouse, he notes, became a grotesque sort of haven for the employees since they, at least, had jobs. Miller's own experience in a warehouse shows in his exceptionally realistic portrayal of the workers, men who often lose themselves in alcohol to escape reality, and women who must put up with sexual abuse and mistreatment ... VHS : Ascent, The
Canadian director Donald Shebib has created two splendid films with mountaineering keynotes, each based upon factual incidents, THE CLIMB (1986), and this work that proves to be more of a "thriller" than are most productions that are announced as being such. High altitude filming requires specific skills not readily taught, but this piece has an advantage of a top-flight camera crew that validates a claim made that it is the highest distance feature yet produced, although several documentaries have recorded activity at greater elevations. Based upon a well-crafted novel, "No Picnic on Mt. Kenya", by Felice Benuzzi, an Italian colonial officer with Mussolini's African theatre war machine who became a prisoner of the English in eastern Kenya, this film dazzles and satisfies while it relates, in expectedly altered form, of events that occurred ...
