VHS : At Play in the Fields of the Lord (2pc)
Where is it? I echo previous reviewers asking why this classic has not been released on DVD. A burnt-out reviewer like Terrence Rafferty (The New Yorker) pans it, but real people who do not live on Manhattan's Upper West Side see virtue in the film. I'm among them and so, happily, is Roger Ebert. Among the many things I like about the film is its portrayal of the wise, patient Catholic priest, who has seen it all yet seems to have retained his faith in a very trying setting and has put his hope where it belongs--in the impenetrable workings of the Holy Spirit.

I also respect and admire the passionate relationship (there's no other word for it) between Moon and Wolfie. Both Berenger and Waits are terrific, but I'd argue Waits steals the show.

The movie aparently cost ... Read More

September 30, 1987 was one day in history that should be remembered in every history book, taught at every school, and remembered across the country. Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen..... what an awesome lineup! People like Billy Idol even showed up to watch as audience members, what more can you ask for. Maybe the single greatest night in music history.

"Candy Mountain" is a fine film by the great Robert Frank
that combines a minor coming of age theme with a road trip in search
of the elusive and great hermit builder of the world's best electric
guitars. This mythic figure, one Elmore Silk, has moved to rural Cape
Breton and disappeared with his fame and guitars, leaving nothing
behind him. Kevin O'Connor plays the innocent and affectless loser
who takes to the road from NYC, moving steadily north pursuing Elmore
Silk and hoping to return to NYC with one of the lengendary guitars.
At each stop along the way he seems to lose more and more of his
material possessions but keeps moving with a determination that is
fueled by the vague hope of somehow bringing back the Holy Grail. And
cashing in.

This won a lot of raves when it came out. As usual, not much happens. But you get a lot of profound, elongated moments when meaningful glances are made that seem to add up to more than they appear. They don't, but it's fun to watch a young Tom Waits. Great soundtrack, as usual. Pretty silly, really. Especially the Italian restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Many extras for buffs only, though the phone interview of Tom Waits is funny.

I think this is one of the most underrated comedies. It's very funny, but the HD fizzles big time. This version is exactly like the DVD. No vivid colors, no pop, just blah. Get the DVD version. Do not buy this HD DVD!

I'm always trying to find Tom in a movie..just to check him out. The gods will be kind one day when Wait's concert documentary Big Time comes out as a legit DVD. Bizarre that such a visual entertainer has no commercial work on DVD. Anyway, this film Cold Feet, is a romp that seems to start out a bit ruthless, and then turns into a road film. Tom plays an idiot/comic crook who really has his head up his butt.If you're a Waits fan, this film will make you smile as you watch Tom's character try to prove himself as a pro, but shoots himself in the foot all the way. Sally Kirkland shows how flexible her chops are as a sex/food nut, and impresses especially since this is so different than her work in her oscar nominated Anna. This is a breezy film and a gift for Waits fans. The role is bigger than what Tom had in Hecto Begencos' classic ... Read More
