This movie is to me Andrei Konchalovsky at his very best.

One of the darkest periods of the Russian history told through the eyes of the innocent Ivan Sanshin. Communist Joseph Stalin purportedly killed millions of fellow Russians through famines, executions, deportations, and in the Gulag, most of them for political reasons. No opposition was allowed whatsoever, and Russia experienced the horrors of a blood-thirsty despotic regime with an asphyxiating cult to the "leaders'" persona.

As we see Ivan Sanshin's story develop in the movie (Tom Hulce), we can't help but wonder how many peoples along history have blindfoldedly fallen in the depths of savage and ruthless regimes?

How many more will keep falling?

We have lessons to learn from ... Read More

This has always been a favorite movie of mine, though I can't point to a particular reason why. It's a star-studded "sleeper" film, a quiet film, filled with hilarious comedy and family dysfunction. Frank Buckman (the fantastic Jason Robards) and Marilyn Buckman (Eileen Ryan, mother to Sean and Chris Penn) are the patriarch and matriarch of the Buckman clan. They have four adult children; Gil Buckman (Steve Martin), Helen Buckman-Lampkin (amazing Diane Wiest), Susan Buckman-Huffner (Harley Jane Kozak) and youngest Larry Buckman (Tom Hulce). Living with Frank and Marilyn is Grandma (my favorite character, played by Helen Shaw).

Gil is married to Karen (Mary Steenburgen) and they have three children, Kevin, Taylor, and Justin. Kevin has emotional problems and the school wants to put him ... Read More

I've loved this movie for years and bought this dvd to replace my old vhs version. I was surprised to find only one disc and moreso to discover that it is reversible. When it came to the end of side one I wasn't sure what to do, but tried flipping it over and sure enough, there was side two. I didn't know there was such a thing and a couple of friends I asked didn't know it either. I don't buy a lot of current dvd's, maybe this is old stuff, but it was news to me..lol..

Heidi Holland, with her degrees from Vassar and Yale and a Fulbright in England under her belt, opens this film lecturing on art history, showing fine portraits of women, painted by women artists who are virtually unknown, though their work is as good as that of the male painters who dominated their ages. Using the art history "hook" into the question of women and their roles--as they see their roles, as men see women's roles, and as women search for happiness within these roles--director Paul Bogart gives life to Wendy Wasserstein's teleplay, adapted from her Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play of the same name. Introducing each change of time period through the changing slides of the art history lecture, the film explores women trying to find meaning in their lives from the late 1960s through the 1990s.

VHS : Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
I frankly don't understand the bad reviews that the "Times" and others have given this riveting remake of the Mary Shelley classic. This is the first movie rendition of the story that comes anywhere close to the Shelley novel. True to form, the story begins and ends at the polar ice cap...as in the novel. The well-intentioned, albeit obssessed, Dr. F. is engaged to the beautiful Elizabeth. I won't give away the plot by expousing on their relationship, but where past grade-B efforts have had no female counterpart to Dr. F., this film version does; indeed, she is a prime motivator, residing at the very heart of what drives much of the story-line. There is some artistic license taken here of course, as with any great work of art. But actor/producer Kenneth Branagh (who plays the good doctor) has certainly earned the latitude. ... Read More

9.September 30, 1955 starring: Richard Thomas, Susan Tyrrell, Deborah Benson, Lisa Blount, Tom Hulce

VHS : September 30, 1955
James Bridges only made eight movies, all of them flawed but fascinating, and September 30, 1955 is as good a place as any to start to penetrate the heart of the mystery. For one thing, it has the feel of an intensely personal, autobiographical film, heavily influenced by Truffaut and Cassavetes, and yet it is filled with unlikely contrivance and coincidence, and the two different modes never coalesce properly--but a remarkable tension builds between them. Just when you're ready to write this one off, a moment of pure cinema drops in from out of nowhere to change your mind. The movie is "high concept" to a degree, since it is all about what happens to Richard Thomas in the hours directly after James Dean's death in 1955. Thomas plays Jimmy J, a sensitive young college student down South and a huge Dean fan. We sometimes ... Read More

Contrary to what other reviews say about this little movie, I love it. I saw it when it first came out, have seen a couple of times since, and recently watched it again on tv. It still held up. It has a quirky style and the surprise ending is wonderful! Tom Hulce is great in it, Virginia Madsen her usual sexy self and I love the little girl who played Bean. It's not a great movie but it does have charm and wit. I hope you give it a try....
