VHS : Shirley Valentine
Shirley Valentine has enjoyed screen and stage success as the story of the ignored and unappreciated British housewife who finally has it up to here with her demanding husband and clueless daughter, secretly running off to Mykonos, one of the Greek Isles, for a change of emotional and attitudinal landscape. Once she ditches her self-absorbed female companion on the trip, Shirley settles into an unexpected romance with a cafe owner (Tom Conti) who reminds her just how lonely she's been. Her decision not to return to the U.K. and stay at the hotel cafe to serve guests puts her husband in crisis and a little self-examination of his own as he packs his bags and heads for the Greek Isles to fetch her. Pauline Collins is witty and charming and very funny as Shirley Valentine, especially as she succumbs ... Read More

VHS : The Haunting of Julia
I saw part of this movie on TV when I was in college well over twenty years ago and the chilling images (some shown and some just implied) have stayed with me all this time. I was delighted to see my cable provider is showing it as part of the "on demand" feature and I finally watched the movie in it entirety this afternoon.

Mia Farrow is perfectly cast as poor vulnerable Julia an American heiress living in London with her husband who seems more interested in her cash than her. When their beloved eight year old daughter tragically chokes to death at breakfast (if they had only known the Heimlich maneuver) her all ready weak marriage falls apart and she rents a huge furnished town home though her husband and his sister continually make efforts to woo Julia and her money back. In her ... Read More

VHS : The Norman Conquests Boxed Set
Same set of characters over the same weekend at the same British country house. Each play takes place in one of the rooms with the characters coming and going between the plays. TNC had runs in London and NY where you saw the 3 plays on any 3 consecutive nights. A gimic - sure. The genius comes in the wonderful, funny writing where the full story and the full understanding of the characters and their relationships blossom with each play. Your understanding of even simple plot points evolves when you see the other plays and what went on in the other rooms leading up to and following the plot points. See it if you are a fan of britcoms. Marvellous cast at the top of their form.

VHS : Gospel According To Vic
A wonderful little gem of a movie. Tom Conti plays a remedial reading teacher in a catholic school; everyone (except Conti) is trying to get the Vatican to recognize the founder of the school as a saint. One day Conti faints and tests indicate he has a brain tumor; later he tumbles from the roof of a building and the tumor disappears. Soon his record player begins playing when the electric is off, red lights turn green when he approaches, and "miracle fever" hits the school and community. Conti tries to scoff it all off, declaring that the "miracles" are the everyday advancements, minute as they are, that his students make learning how to read. The movie is utterly charming and immensely entertaining in a quiet way. Conti is excellent. Very, very enjoyable.

American Dreamer became a cult film among our friends and family when it came out in the 1980's. We continue to watch it and we were so glad when it came out in DVD! It has adventure, romance, housewife-gone-wild and Paris fashions as well. Still worth the watch!

VHS : Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Let me say that I am usually against all remakes of classic movies, even if it is meant to update the subject and bring it forth to younger audiences.

In my view, younger audiences should make a culture for themselves, by watching the classics as they were and then, eventually, move on, not the other way round.

It is just watching "Romeo + Juliet" (Leonardo DiCaprio's vehicle), and pretending to know Shakespeare.
It is simply an insult to good taste and culture as such.

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978) is no Shakespeare and does not pretend to be an everlasting classic.
It is not even a remake as such. It is a follow-up to the original 1956 counterpart of the same name, which still remains a chilling and effective movie to this day (a bit like Hitchcock movies).

It ... Read More

This VHS tape of the first part of Norman Conquests is an excellent play, very well written and well acted. It is unfortunate that it is only available in VHS and not DVD but I was still pleased to be able to get it.

The play is hilarious and well worth watching.
