VHS : Turning Point
I am very surprised that this movie had this high ratings. I may agree with others on the right casting, but this was not my genre. I mean, I love watching ballet but I hated to see ballet connected with divorce, alcohol, sexual relationships before marriage, jealous, mean words and actions, and swearing words. It was a very ugly movie with a beautiful ballet. The dance was exquisite but I didn't enjoy it at all because I didn't like the characters at all. When my daughter covered her ears, I had to turn it off. The peace came back as soon as it was shut off. I picked this movie because it was on the government's pick list, but I don't think my Heavenly Father wants me to watch this again.

VHS : High Road to China
"High Road to China" is a classic. It had a great cast and good directing. The movie had action, adventure, comedy, danger, romance, and history. Tom Selleck is at his best. Bess Armstrong gives a stellar performance; as do Jack Weston, Wilford Brimley, et al. As with his movies, T.S's presence on the silver screen, doesn't overpower the other actors/actresses. It is a crime against good films not to view it, let alone not to own it !

VHS : Nixon
As a filmmaker I appreciate Oliver Stone, his provactive, political, conspiratorial, curious, enigmatic, ominous visions of Americana are the stuff of high entertainment. Right or wrong, his works are wonderful cinema, it doesn't matter if his version is slanted to the left, it is a distinct vision and he is skilled at executing it.
Be that as it may Nixon is no JFK. Though both are named for presidents of the same era, one is about a murder and it's associate conspiracies-presented in staggering detail, while the other is a psychological Greek-styled high drama of a hugely important personality, flawed and potent, crumbling and explosive.
Anthony Hopkins disappears into the role, and as these things usually do, a great actor and a great part/material make the best of art. Hopkins ... Read More

VHS : Three for the Show
Julie (Betty Grable) and Vernon Lowndes (Gower Champion) are a great team. He writes 'em and she plays 'em on the stage, but their team is incomplete. Julie's former husband Marty Stewart (Jack Lemmon) used to co-write the shows, but he was killed during the war, or at least that is what everyone thinks. In reality, Marty was marooned on an island; it was another Martin Stewart that died. Julie and Vernon are in for the shock of their lives when Marty returns and anticipates home sweet home, but finds himself involved in a case of bigamy.

This film has some great music, especially the Gershwin and Porter songs. Unfortunately, most of the musical sequences come off as bizarre thanks to the way they suddenly appear as if out of nowhere. For example, it takes some time to adjust to the fact that ... Read More

VHS : One Against the Wind
Mary Lindell is a household name in Great Britain. Thank God that HALLMARK took the time to recreate her daringly true escapades in smuggling evaders into unoccupied zones during WW2. For dramatic purposes, much of ONE AGAINST THE WIND has been rearranged and condensed . As exciting as this presentation of Mary Lindell's exploits is, her real life was even MORE dramatic than what HALLMARK assembled!( Read the book NO DRUMS,NO TRUMPETS by J.B. Wayne!!!!!)

Nevertheless, this film is extraordinary for what it accomplishes and Judy Davis is spot-on as the resourceful, courageous and mulishly strong-minded Mary. It is significant to note that Mary Lindell was 45 years old when she and her family began smuggling people out of occupied France, first by sheer bluff and boldness! Her methods ... Read More

I love this show and the cast were just wonderful, I watch it all the time. Craig T. Nelson, was just completely right for this part. He was sexy, tall and looked the part of a Air Force Colonel. A must!

VHS : Hunt for Red October
Some punk junkie named Sick Boy in the the Danny Boyle cult classic TRAINSPOTING espouses a "theory" of his in which he uses the career of Sean Connery to illustrate. Basically he believes that for everybody in life at one point you got it, then you don't. There's a period in your life, probably when you were younger, when you could have had *it* but then you loose *it* and are past your prime. Well, the other character listening to this was right to feel unimpressed by this cocky punk's disrespectful and plainly dumb understanding of human accomplishment. Sean Connery was the original and coolest James Bond but it was not all downhill from those glory days. Connery's performance THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER disproves Sick Boy's theory (along with a few others in his career btw). Alec Baldwin is also good, his take on CIA ... Read More

***** Spoiler Alert *****

Hats off to Mr. Eastwood for getting me to watch a film about women's boxing. I believe that boxing (regardless of gender) is largely barbaric and distasteful.

Add to that, women's boxing is made up in part by ex-prostitutes and ex-strippers, which means that we are heading into degrading territory. Even Frankie deemed female boxing a freak show, rendering him highly reluctant to get involved.

The true heart of this movie is a father-figure daughter-figure love story.

Frankie had to overcome the following to give Maggie her final gift:

1) ethical concerns
2) legal concerns
3) the guilt-inducing part of Catholicism that would have him go against his heart
4) the life-driven part of humanity that struggles against ... Read More
