I thought the artistry was great in this movie, but it's definitely not for youngsters who like claymation. The subject content was pretty morbid, even though the movie ends positively. I was kind of shocked that it was so violently suggestive - it was scary, and I'm an adult. I felt uncomfortable, which is why I don't watch it that often. After seeing this, I am much happier watching his other works like "Wallace and Gromit", which is far more suitable for children.

VHS : Sheltering Sky
The Sheltering Sky is based on the book of the same name by expatriate writer, composer, and traveler, Paul Bowles. Bowles himself has led quite an interesting life, besides appearing in a cameo and as the narrator of The Sheltering Sky, he has settled in Tangiers, Morocco, where he has lived for 52 years with his Jane, where their neighbor was William S. Burroughs. Another writer he met along the way was Christopher Isherwood who utilized his last name for the character of Sally Bowles in the story that provided the basis for the musical, Cabaret.

Port Moresby (John Malkovich) would seem to be modeled on Bowles himself; however, there are some important differences. In an autobiography, the one thing that you can be reasonably sure of is the protagonist will not die, but to think ... Read More

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) play. He utterly and with an exquisite degree of facial movement replicates a man who doesn't understand the drama he is watching, can barely relate to it, or can only respond to it as a Victorian might, but respects it. Broadbent's depiction of a Victorian popular artist thinking through the artistic problems ... Read More

Half an hour into the movie, I honestly was bored to tears and nearly cringed at this entire film. The only thing that's good about this film is the visuals, but flashy visuals don't mean anything if there's not a story. After just 20 minutes I got tired of watching the actors do nothing more but turn up their noses in snobbery and trying to acquire a French accent, which is not the least bit natural or believable. And Uma Thurman is absolutely boring and lackluster. In general, Vatel was boring. Even if there was an actual story, i wouldn't even care to know.

Mike Leigh's film won Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival. A young black woman decides to find her birth-mother only to discover her mother is white, just one among many of the SECRETS & LIES of this tale. A first-rate cast delivers knock-out performances. A bit on the long side, the film has both drama and comical moments, with a healthy helping of tenderness. The DVD has a good quality transfer of the widescreen original but no bonus features apart from the trailer (and a few other trailers). A first-rate comedy/drama with heart!

I thought, from reading the description, that this would be boring. But it wasn't, not by a long shot. It's probably the best "Young Indy".

The action is limited to the first five or so minutes, where Lieutenant De Fonz (aka Indy) disobeys his superior and tells the troops to advance instead of retreat. This results in victory, and a promotion to Captain, but also the Major holding a grudge. Naturally, Indy and the Major are then teamed up on a mission to retrieve some weapons.

The opening battle sequence was even more graphic then "Trenches of Hell", and when Indy grabs the machine gun and mows done countless men, we see just how far he's come (or fallen) in less than a year. I love this one for all the character developement Indy undergoes, especially in relation to the previous videos. It's good to keep ... Read More

Excellent performances abound. Christopher Lambert in one of his early acting (rather than more recent "movie star") roles. Joss Ackland is his stalwart, dependable best. But it's Ed Harris's flick, one for the portfolio, at a time when he was still (largely) flying under everyone's radar. This reviewer's introduction to Tim Roth and Pete Postlethwaite, as well. Memorable stuff.

Looking forward to seeing director Holland's fine Solidarity tale on a remastered, anamorphic widescreen DVD.

I purchased this movie because I thought it would be appropriate for my family movie night. Thankfully the kids were more interested in playing than movie watching as my sister and I had the opportunity to pre-screen. OH, MY...this movie is NOT FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!! I've never read the books, but the movie was totally inappropriate and should have been rated PG-13. This film is full of abuse...attempted murder of three children, physical abuse, and almost on the verge of sexual abuse as Jim Carey's character tries to marry the female CHILD. Regardless of what the marriage was supposed to be intended for in no way does it ever make sense for a nasty old man to marry a little girl. Just gross. My kids will not watch this movie and I dare to say I probably won't be able to tolerate for another sitting myself. What a disappointment!!

Wild horses couldn't get most of us to watch a full-length Shakespeare play starring Alicia Silverstone, but give the girl credit for really trying! (I do like the review below in which the reviewer criticizes Silverstone for speaking her dialogue with emphasis on every single word, it's true.) So even while I take off two stars for the terrible performance she gives, I add two stars because I think she's so great. What! A paradox worthy of the great Matthew Lillard. In any case she looks enchanting and her expressions in the cafe scenes with her girlfriends, as she glances from face to face, often seeming to anticipate who will be speaking next, give the viewer the feeling of being a pinball in a mighty pinball machine of the late 16th century. She must have been studying, or Branagh must have been feeding her, videotapes of old Cybill Shepherd movies ... Read More
