VHS : Pearl (The Miniseries)
Yes this is just a big soap opera, and most of the stories are just filler to set up the attack, but there is a strong feeling of a throw back to films of bygone days here that makes me like this even though i know it stinks. The attack last longer in this than it did in real life, and they keep leaping from it to some more soap opera filler that get very annoying after a while. The cast is ok but with all the corny line they have it's not really fair to say they are not good , they do what they can. I grew up in the 70's and these miniseries were a steady T.V. diet of the time,so some of my fondness for this mess is because it takes me back to younger days, and as such some will like it for that others will be less kind .

VHS : Killer Elite
Not high up on the list of Sam Peckinpah movies, this is actually a pretty entertaining and -- for Peckinpah -- toned down movie. Caan and Duval star as employees of a private security company that protects defectors for the CIA. When one such defector -- in the opening -- asks if they work for the CIA Caan's reponse is "CIA? Cirumcised Italian Americans." Duval later kills the man and leaves his former friend cripped and, supposedly, out of the game. Caan embarks on an odyssey to return to form and kill his former compatriot. Also starring Burt Young (Rocky), Bo Hopkins, Gig Young, Mako and Arthur Hill. Following Robert Mitchum's THE YAKUZA and preceeding Michael Douglas' BLACK RAIN, an interesting look at the Japanese underworld and ninjas. Classic ending line: "I don't know where we're ... VHS : Catch the Heat
Tiana Alexandra (real name Tran Thi Thanh Nga, The Killer Elite, From Hollywood to Hanoi) is a sexy femme fatale here as "Checkers", with some decent acting and skilled, fantastical kicking technique. The male police leads play their comic roles effectively. Rod Steiger draws a paycheck as the lead bad guy; Harold Sakata ("Oddjob") plays a thug who tries to kill Checkers---and gets bashed by a prop ironing iron among other things (at least I hope it was a prop!) 5 stars is my rating, primarily for the beautiful Ms. Alexandra in her "Cinderella Pu" get-up. Although she may have left action work for more serious projects (From Hollywood to Hanoi, racial attitudes in Hollywood writings, etc.), she'll be remembered.
