VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
This used to be on television about a hundred times a year until somebody realized that it diminished its value. Now rarely on tv, this dvd is an entertaining, heart-warming story. It only takes a viewing of this movie spectacular to put me right in the mood for Christmas. James Stewart plays George Bailey who has led his entire life giving of himself to help others when a banking error by his uncle could end it all for poor George.

An angel comes to his rescue and shows George what life would have been without him. With the beautiful Donna Reed as his wife and gruff and mean Mr. Potter played by the highly talented Lionel Barrymore, this dvd is a must for any collection, and epecially any library of Christmas classics.

VHS : Gone with the Wind
This is the 716th review of this movie! What can I say that has not already been said about this wonderfully compelling movie? I will not comment on the restoration process or the pros and cons of buying the 2-disk or 4-disk set, as this is adequately discussed by many other reviewers. I will say that this movie won 10 Academy awards and is still regarded as the 6th best epic movie of all-time. That should be credentials enough to want to view this extraordinary movie.

Watching this movie is an absolutely delightful experience, and I can just imagine attending the movie in the theatre for the first time! I can just imagine the excitement and the buzz of conversation during the intermission, for the first half of this movie is quite unlike any other movie up to that date in time. ... Read More

VHS : Mr Smith Goes to Washington
Frank Capra's classic "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" was originally intended as a sequel to "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town." Unfortunately, Gary Cooper was unavailable. Capra then opted to make a movie about Frederic Chopin, but the studio protested, saying it would be too expensive. The rest is history. The messages in this excellent motion picture about honor and integrity in a corrupt society and asking for God's guidance in a troubled time ring truer now than at any other moment in history. James Stewart gives another career-defining performance as a young Boy Ranger leader unwittingly thrust into the political machine of Washington, D.C. Shame that the movie ended abruptly as it did. Excellent performances by everyone, especially Mr. Stewart, Jean Arthur, Thomas Mitchell (who appeared in no less than 3 movies ... Read More

VHS : Tales of Manhattan
I first saw this movie years ago on AMC - I'd never heard of it but there wasn't anything else on, so I settled in to watch. After all, with the cast of stars including Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson, I figured it couldn't be too bad. I was wrong - it was GREAT! The story involves a tailcoat which is passed from one story to the next and affects the lives of each person who receives it. Some of the stories were pure 40's fluff and that's okay - I like fluff. But two of the "tales" especially touched my heart - so much so that here I sit, years later, writing a review that I hope will inspire someone else to watch this hidden gem. You'll see other people talk about the vignette with the great Edward G. and I agree - it's absolutely one of the best stories and ... Read More

I saw this movie when I was a kid of course and now that I teach US History was hoping that it might work in place of the ever popular Saving Private Ryan. The movie is all about the background of the boys, how they grew up, the relationship they had as brothers, their fighting spirit and how they tried to make sure they stayed together in the military (in this case the Navy) during the war. I have to be honest, since I was looking at this film for use in my class I was hoping for more story of them on the ship but that part takes all of about 10 minutes. But as far as good old movies go - this is a delight.

VHS : Devil & Daniel Webster
This movie is two parts good ol' slice of Americana and one part gripping ghost story, as a man named Jabez (his name is but one of the many comparisons this movie will make to Job) Stone, in a fit of rage, attracts the devil with the curse "I'd sell my soul to the devil for two pennies!" He's lucky enough that the conversation goes further than that and he gets to trade his soul ("merely a small thing") for seven years good luck and a pile of gold up front. Of course these narratives are always very bizarre to me: doesn't the devil appearing in anthropomorphic form basically immediately alert the character, who exists obviously in a Christian world with access to the texts, that the devil's own very existence proves the existence of an anthropomorphic God who will hold true to the promises written in the Bible? But never mind ... Read More

VHS : Keys of the Kingdom
Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't buy any other product. I, for one, would like to see a little more tension in the story, a little more ambiguity, a priest who isn't quite so sure of himself, a congregation that maintains a healthy skepticism about its shepherd, even as it hungers for the real article so rarely encountered, ...
