Having seen this gem in college, in a cinematography class, I will never forget it. Possibly one of Voigt's best ever. Compare this character to the part he played in "Enemy of the State" and you'll be amazed at the spectrum of his acting skills. The only thing BAD about this movie is the administrator character who is an evil person. I think he was played by Hume Cronyn. But his performance, too, is outstanding. I saw this just recently on one of the oldies networks like AMC. And I was able to share it with my family who came to love this move. DO NOT miss this one. And why is it not out on DVD? It was a GREAT social commentary of the time. Scratch that...it IS a great social commentary of the time. The acting is more than good, it is pure and very real...by all parties. I highly ... This movie is two parts good ol' slice of Americana and one part gripping ghost story, as a man named Jabez (his name is but one of the many comparisons this movie will make to Job) Stone, in a fit of rage, attracts the devil with the curse "I'd sell my soul to the devil for two pennies!" He's lucky enough that the conversation goes further than that and he gets to trade his soul ("merely a small thing") for seven years good luck and a pile of gold up front. Of course these narratives are always very bizarre to me: doesn't the devil appearing in anthropomorphic form basically immediately alert the character, who exists obviously in a Christian world with access to the texts, that the devil's own very existence proves the existence of an anthropomorphic God who will hold true to the promises written ... Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't buy any other product. I, for one, would like to see a little more tension in the story, a little more ambiguity, a priest who isn't quite so sure of himself, a congregation that maintains a healthy skepticism about its shepherd, even as it hungers for the real article ... The reason I claim this as the best love story, ever, is because its the only one I have seen that tells the fundamental truth of love in a long term relationship.
Its not a comedy.
Using a science fiction premise and some of the most elegantly subtle special effects I have ever seen... the film presents the idea of being able to do away with our bad experiences by having them literally deleted.
Could we be happier without the heartache we have suffered? Or is that heartache rooted in our sense of loss over memories that were, once, cherished?

The film does not gloss over the hard parts... but cuts to the core of what it is to love another human being... good and bad.
The erosion of our thoughtless actions and words on each other and the idea we have of what love ought to be.

Its the type of movie that you cry and laugh with. Bob Hope being serious, something you don't see very often. Just shows what a great actor he could be. Put him and Lucy together makes for a great movie. I love the Damon Runyon type movies. If you haven't seen The Lemon Drop Kid, its good also. Get the puffs out, you'll need them.

A winner for Jane Powell. This movie was done back in the 40's before she got the 50's look. Except also in Holiday in Mexico, she never looked so beautiful. This time though she does a scene or two in braids and looks adorable. As a movie it's a filler, but a fine one. Jane Powell sneaks onto her father's trip in order to meet her favorite opera singer. On the way the both of them fall in love, her father results in a marriage, hers she admits a "passing fling". The guy has an eerie similarity to Joey Lawrence.
Marina Koshetz, the supporting actress, almost steals the show as an annoying opera singer. Her performance of I've got you under my skin was funny.

VHS : Thursday
I rented Thursday about a decade ago and was blown away by the performance of Thomas Jane. His charismatic portrayal of a very bad man gone domesticated was mesmerizing and watching him try to uphold his perfect suburban life while his past comes back to haunt him is hoot to watch. When he finally cracks and the raw emotion of his situation boils over, its a scene that still resonates. The cast is rounded out by a collection of interesting character actors including Mickey Rourke, Aaron Eckhart & Paulina Porizkova who all make this one rowdy Tarantionesque ride. Buy it if you can find it!
