VHS : Little Indian, Big City
This movie is poor in every dimension. The most egregious of its inadequacies is the director's inability to tell such a simple story. Any scene of impending interest is killed; leaving the feeling that the director is trying to create a movie out of loosely related short vignettes, thus deliberately downplaying anything that could be mistaken for a plot. The only reason I finished this movie was because I could not believe how bad it was. I have turned off many a "better" movie. This could be ranked as one of the ten worst directed movies in history. Unfortunately, you can not rank something as zero stars on Amazon.

VHS : American Werewolf in Paris
This movie is sequel in name only to the werewolf classic film "An American Werewolf in London". The plot is silly. The bad guys are goofy rather than menacing. The ending has to be one of the lamest that I have ever seen for a horror movie. The only things I liked about this movie were the werewolf effects and the delicious Julie Delpy. This movie was made in the 1990s and stands as proof that the decade served as a dry spell for good horror films. Buy at your own risk!!

This comic masterpiece was as big a riot for me as it was in my first viewing some 7 years prior, and it does indeed recall the satire of Moliere. However, this time I started to find the cruelty in the premise gnawing a bit at my conscience. Perhaps it was the chance in a second viewing to study the characters more than the plot, whereby Monsieur Pignon appeared too affectionate and likeable to ridicule for sport. I might have even tweaked the ending to inflict the final comeuppance on Pierre with NO help from Pignon. Then I slapped myself in the face with a reminder that THIS IS AFTERALL JUST A FARCE, with Pignon in the end no less a fool than, say, Stan of "Laurel & Hardy" or Norton of "The Honeymooners". And no less so than previously, I found myself getting caught up in the sequence of ... Read More

VHS : Now Ladies & Gentlemen (Sub)
Sometimes it's a director's least ambitious films that are their most satisfying. And Now... Ladies and Gentlemen... may just be a piece of romantic fluff from Claude Lelouch, but it's entertaining romantic fluff that doesn't outstay its welcome even at the 128-minute mark. Lelouch is a talented director whose ambition is only rarely matched by his material, usually overcompensating with impressive technique that fails to hide the thinness of the story and characters. While no-one could ever mistake And Now... for having any depth, it's a pure audience pleaser (albeit possibly for a middle-aged cinema audience that no longer exists) that genuinely pleases. It's rarely laugh out loud funny and it's not one of the great screen romances, but it is a charming and engaging number skilfully crafted.

6.My Best Friend's Girl starring: Coluche, Isabelle Huppert, Thierry Lhermitte, François Perrot, Daniel Colas

VHS : My Best Friend's Girl
The fabulous alpine scenery of the Courchevel ski resort nearly upstages the fine actors in this very funny bedroom farce from Bertrand Blier, director of "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs." An itinerant sexpot (Isabelle Huppert) intrudes upon the friendship of a handsome but vacuous ski bum (Thierry Lhermitte) and his self-proclaimed "short, fat" pal (Coluche). Much of the fun involves watching how scared the two would-be romeos become when confronted with a sexually aggressive young woman. Coluche, looking and acting for all the world like John Belushi, gives a truly memorable performance. This comedy, incidentally, was the basis for the Julia Roberts film "My Best Friend's Wedding", although that version made the switch to having two women compete for one man.

VHS : Until September
This trite film is an amalgamation of every bad romance novel you have ever read. Feeble plot, improbable situations, lovely locale, attractive leads. I think Karen Allen is a fine actress (Starman will always be one of my favorite movies) but her somber lovely gaze and wistful smile are wasted in her role as an American very improbably stranded in Paris.

She immediately encounters an impossibly handsome married French banker(Thierry Lheritte) and they soon embark on a torrid affair. The cultural juxtapositions are embarassing and the unprotected sex (ah, the pre-AIDS world) makes one wince for his absent wife if no one else.

Don't get me wrong, I love Cinderella romances as much as the next girl and I have always believed that Pretty Woman could maybe happen (well at least if one ... Read More
