VHS : Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors
I remember watching and loving this opera every year when I was a child. I was disappointed when the network stopped airing it. Now that Mr. Menotti has passed away, perhaps the news coverage will encourage the production of a good DVD version of this classic. Hope someone's listening!

2.Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas, Domingo starring: Teresa Stratas, Plácido Domingo, Cornell MacNeil, Allan Monk, Pina Cei
directed by: Franco Zeffirelli

VHS : Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas, Domingo
Domingo sings beautifully, Stratas less so but looks and acts the part. The biggest problem is there are so many cuts and shortened arias that you could almost call this "extended highlights". And Zeferelli over-produces, particularly with camera work. If you want a movie version get Anna Moffo's of over 30 years ago. Now there was a Violetta!

I purchased the video on laser disc when it first came out and I have worn it out listening to it. I'd love to have a DVD of the work, and additionally a CD to listen to in the car. Alas neither appear to be available. You'll love the interplay between the modern and opera within the opera, as noted above. I saw the production at both the Met and the Lyric Opera in Chicago. It is a superb new work.

This DVD of Cosi Fan Tutti is a gift, so I haven't watched it and cannot comment on the quality of the performance, but it shipped quickly and arrived in excellent condition.

VHS : Il Tabarro / Pagliacci
This video features Luciano Pavarotti in the role which could not be perfect for Pavarotti's voice. The question is how can pure lyrical voice of Pavarotti handle the title role of "Pagliaci". Listen and watch this video and you going to find out how. I tell you more: Pavarotti is not simply handling the role, he brings such an excitment, such a dramatism to the role that I personally could not imagine. I never knew that singing like this could be possible. His "Vesti La giubba" is not as great as Del Monaco's but listen, listen to him in the last scene, what he does is beyond imagination, he is 100 percent involved in the opera, his eyes are full of hate and despair and his last "La comedia e finita" followed by dramatic melody performed by orchestra is really something that makes you freeze for a moment and then ... VHS : Stratasphere
In this magnificent documentary, Canadian-born soprano Teresa Stratas tells the story of her life, from her humble beginnings in a Greek family in Toronto to her triumphs on the greatest operatic stages of the world, to her conflictual relationship with her voice, fame, life and obsession with death, to her soul-searching trips to India and year devoted to helping Mother Teresa at the hospital for the dying children in Calcutta. She demonstrates the many meanings one can give to a simple musical sentence (from Kurt Weill's "Mahagonny"), and we see her rehearsing with Franco Zeffirelli in the privacy of her Manhattan apartment the final scene of Puccini's "Boheme", in which she acts, or rather is Mimi with an intensity that is reminiscent of this other demented Greek soprano, Callas. No ordinary Prima Donna (is there such ... Read More

VHS : Leoncavallo - Pagliacci
Franco Zefirelli makes here an astonishing film adaptation of Leocavallo`s famed opera. Though using scenarios sometimes, the settings are convincing and give another dimension to what was to be carried out in an opera stage. The production surely adds to the musical quality. In relation to this, Domingo is superb. Pagliacci is, no doubt, one of his best roles and he is in a great form. More than this, this record shows us that Domingo can be an extraordinarily convincing actor for an opera singer. The other singers are great as well and were it not because of the great presentation by Domingo, they surely could be de highlights of the cast. The production is really a must for any opera lover, whith great music quality crowned by great scenes.
