VHS : League of Gentlemen
Basil Dearden's seldom seen 1960 heist film The League of Gentlemen has provided the template for almost every significant heist film which has followed it from Oceans 11 to the Italian Job and others.

The film follows the exploits of Hyde (Jack Hawkins) an ex British military officer who has been forced into mandatory retirement as he plans and executes a major British bank robbery. Gathering around him a group of exmilitary experts he puts together a methodical robbery plan that he feels is gauranteed not to fail. The excellent ensemble cast includes Nigel Patrick (Race), Roger Livesey (Mycroft) and Richard Attenborough (Lexy).

The film starts rather slowly as the plan is hatched but then moves into overdrive as the actual planning of the robbery is organized. This ... Read More

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
I have the entire collection of the Carmichael Wimseys, and although I agree with the reviewer who said the actor doesn't meet my image of the character, I also have to say that he does grow on one with each succeeding play--and, because of it's vintage (970's), the series is in fact more like filmed theater, which makes it all the more enjoyable. By the time I got to Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise I enjoyed the Carmichael take on the character. I'm not sure quite who could play this role true to the author's version. The Edward Petherbridge Wimsey Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (The Lord Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane Collection - Strong Poison / Have His Carcass / Gaudy Night)was also difficult to engage with, but his version was also very good. Perhaps the character is so much a creature ... Read More

Edward Fox: the Original Terminator...

It's an old adage in fiction: there are no new stories, only well re-told ones. One can see this in 1973's The Day of the Jackal wherein the suave Edward Fox is the original Terminator rising from each setback to ruthlessly continue his terminator mission.

I don't usually review films because so many other people do and there may or may not be little left to say. However, sometimes a truly quality work of cinematographic art moves me to emphatically share with others its excellence: this is the case with The Day of the Jackal.

Now, probably most viewers will have seen this old chestnut on commercial TV interspersed with infinite advertisements, sliced and diced to atomic particles. That is NOT the way to see this ... Read More

VHS : The Pallisers, Set 1
After Susan Hampshire had played Fleur Forsyte, Becky Sharp, and Lady Sarah Churchill for the great BBC miniseries of the late 60s and early 70s it might have seemed inevitable that she was called upon to play her greatest part, Lady Glencora M'Cluskie Palliser, when the BBC decided to adapt Trollope's six "Parliamentary" novels over the period of three years beginning in 1974. Oddly enough, as she explains in an interview extra on this DVD, the part was originally slated to be played by Hayley Mills. But when Mills had to bow out for personal reasons, Hampshire was called to play the part she was almost born to essay, and the greatest treat in this terrific Victorian soap opera is watching her lovely and loopy "Lady Glen," the wealthiest titled woman in England who is yet so childlike and insecure she clutches ... VHS : Frankenstein (1984)
This British version of Frankenstein suffers from a low budget, and it shows its lack of funding at times, but is actually not a bad movie. It does have the atmosphere of a TV movie, so it is somewhat hard to compare it to other film versions of the Frankenstein story. The makeup on the monster is rather hideous, but looks like something a novice could apply. For a low budget film, it does have great sets and period costumes. Carrie Fisher has less of a role than she is billed for but is still quite pretty and charming in this film (she does a good British accent for a native Californian). All in all, this version of Frankenstein is not nearly the classic the 1931 version was, but is entertaining and worth watching.

I'd like to add my voice to that of the others who are hoping for a widescreen DVD release of this excellent film. It was available that way some years ago on laserdisc and it looked great. Heston, Cooper and Harris work extremely well together; the model work is better than average for its time; the tank shots feature some of the most convincing water/storm effects ever put on film. The original book was a best-seller when it came out and this film version does a generally excellent job of capturing its essence (am I the only person to detect a certain similarity between it and Morgan Robertson's turn-of-the-last-century novel "Futility"?). In view of all the unbelievable *junk* coming out on DVD right now, there's simply no reason for "Mary Deere" to remain buried in the vaults.

VHS : Modesty Blaise
About a long while ago I saw on my digital cable that "Modesty Blaise" was going to be on the Fox Movie Channel so I taped it since that I was going to see another movie. When I watched the film later on, I couldn't believe how bad it was. For those that are thinking about buying this movie on DVD, DON'T! It is as of now the worst 60's movie that I have ever seen and there are enough holes to fill swiss cheese. The thing that really kills me is that Monica Vitti (an Italian actress who-hello!-is playing a British spy) changes her hair from black to blond and back again; as if we have two Modesty Blaises. Also of note I couldn't see most of the opening credits as it surrounded by a pop title song! (that seems to be modeled later by "Barbarella" which was based on a comic book like this one) The movie may be 119 minutes long but ... Read More
