VHS : What's Up, Tiger Lily?
There are so many great one-liners in this film that it would be hard to know where to begin. Oh, and don't miss an appearance by the Lovin' Spoonful and the guy with the really bad Peter Lorre imitation. The English dub job Woody Allen did on this movie is ten times funnier than most of the movies made nowadays. I loved it!

VHS : Chushingura
Chushingura is a historical epic set in the early 1700's in Japan. Despite being filmed in 1962, its use of a classic film style and Japanese artistic sensibility make it accessible to contemporary viewers. The story is well told and engages the viewer immediately in the problems of an honorable man surrounded by corruption.

Lord Asano is pressured to pay bribes to a corrupt court official, Kira, but he refuses and puts himself and his entire clan at risk. His friends and vassals warn him of the dangers of this step but he is determined to do the right thing. Kira is angry that Asano wont payoff and he provokes Asano. Asano loses his temper, draws his sword and attacks Kira at court. Kira is injured and Asano is instructed to commit seppuku, which he performs honorably and dutifully. ... Read More

VHS : None But the Brave
None But The Brave is a fun & entertaining movie, and i'm so happy it was finally released to DVD. But what's the deal with the subtitles? If you choose to turn them off, you can't see what the Japanese are saying, and my Japanese is pretty rusty to say the least. If you turn the subtitles on however, you can see what the Japanese are saying, but then are forced to read what the Americans are saying as well. It's basically an 'all-or-nothing' deal, and it's somewhat distracting to the movie itself. I own the VHS version of this movie, and there's only subtitles when the Japanese are speaking, which is the way it should be on DVD too. I suppose I can keep switching the subtitles off/on between the American and Japanese scenes? But why should I have to?

5.The Bad Sleep Well starring: Toshirô Mifune, Masayuki Mori, Kyôko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi, Takashi Shimura

VHS : The Bad Sleep Well
Akira Kurosawa's 1960 black and white film, The Bad Sleep Well (Warui Yatsu Hodo Yoku Nemuru), is often compared to William Shakespeare's Hamlet, but it's an inapt comparison for, while Shakespeare's play has a higher sense of poetry, Kurosawa's film has far more relevance, realism, and complexity, even if, like Hamlet, it's a high class melodrama. The film was written by Kurosawa and four collaborators- Shinobu Hashimoto, Eijirô Hisaita, Ryuzo Kikushima, and Hideo Oguni. Because it has Shakespearean pedigree, and is not set in medieval Japan, this film has not gotten its proper due, in comparison with the classics that Kurosawa made earlier in his career, such as Rashomon, Ikiru, and Seven Samurai. But, it should, for, despite its melodramatic bent, and film noir roots- heightened by Masaru Sato's wonderful soundtrack, ... Read More

VHS : High and Low
For me this is one of the greatest works of cinema every created. I am not prone to hyperbole, but High and Low constantly remains at the top of my favorite movies list. Toshiro Mifune shines brightly.

VHS : The Burmese Harp
Quite simply, this is one of the most emotionally beautiful movies I have ever seen. I can't entirely explain why I find it so touching. Amid the most horrific of experiences, a kind, simple young man tries to make sense of his participation in this horror.

The movie is filled with singing and harp playing. In the abject misery of defeat and desolation, the soldiers cheer and comfort themselves with song. They sing in unison to strengthen their unity and patriotism but one, the harpist, is separated. He is wounded and nursed back to health by a Buddhist monk. After he recovers, he experiences a spiritual epiphany not unlike Saul on the road to Demascus.

He wanders alone and seperate across the blasted landscape littered with piles of war dead. In his confusion and sorrow, he assigns himself the impossible task of ... Read More
