1.Man of Marble starring: Krystyna Janda, Jerzy Radziwilowicz, Tadeusz Lomnicki, Jacek Lomnicki, Michal Tarkowski

VHS : Man of Marble
One of Wajda's most politically daring films, "Marble" was censored upon release, yet it resonates with the same animus for corruption that ultimately drove the Soviets from power. Agnieszka's difficulties with a wary producer and the reluctance of her interview subjects to speak on-camera parallel the story of an idealized worker, movingly depicted by Radziwilowicz, banished for challenging Party authority. Employing a "Citizen Kane"-like story structure, Wajda cleverly satirizes both the filmmaking impulse as well as government distortions of truth.

2.All of Me starring: Georgette Dee, Miroslaw Baka, Mechthild Grossmann, Tadeusz Lomnicki, Terry Truck
directed by: Bettina Wilhelm

VHS : Blind Chance (1987) (Sub)
If you have ever held a pupa in your grip, you know that, if held up to a light, at a certain angle, the fully formed insect can be seen, even though it has yet to emerge. This was the sensation that I had while watching Polish director Krzystof Kieslowski's 1981 film Blind Chance (Przypadek) after having seen his glorious Three Colors trilogy. It is a film that could have been great, had it been made a decade later in Kielsowski's career, but made when it was it merely has tantalizing glimpses of his later greatness. However, it is, by no means, a bad film, and certainly quite a bit superior to two later films that owe it quite a bit of debt- Germany's Run, Lola, Run, directed by TomTykwer, and Britain's Sliding Doors- a Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle, directed by Peter Howitt, both from 1998.

VHS : A Generation
Sometimes films get reputations way out of proportion with their artistic merit simply because they expound a point of view that the public, or critics, like or agree with. Such is the case with the first feature length film from Polish film legend Andrzej Wajda. Released in 1955, the 87 minute long black and white film A Generation (Pokolenie), is not a particularly good film. No, it's not a bad film, but it visually resembles a mediocre 1940s film noir admixed with a touch of Italian Neo-Realism from its blighted and impoverished landscapes. Its characters, such as they are, are not realistic, and merely one dimensional tools for the agitprop that is at the heart of the film.
Yes, one must realize that the film needed to be green lighted by Polish censors, but unlike the ways a more mature ... Read More

Do not purchase or rent this film if you do not understand Polish! There are NO English language subtitles on this DVD!

Since I do not speak or understand Polish I watched the film without knowing what is going on in the story. Other than that the film itself is quite good, thus the three stars.

VHS : The Deluge (Potop)
Hunky Polish actor Daniel Obrychski plays our hero Andrzej Kmicic in this saga of love, war, and treachery in 17th-century Poland. Kmicic falls in love with the lovely Olenka only to have a pre-Ikea Swedish invasion complicate matters for him. Kmicic unwisely chooses to ally himself with the dastardly Hetman Radziwill who promptly hands over the country to the Swedish King and his evil hordes of musketeers after the Hetman promises to keep Olenka safe. (Pay attention to the hats: it's the only way to keep track of the good guys and the bad guys in this complicated epic. The Swedes wear big floppy wide brimmed ones, the Poles demure feathered pillboxes or furry turbans). Accused of treachery by the loyal Poles, Kmicic is abandoned by his pals including Colonel Wolodyjowski (of the eponymous earlier-filmed sequal), ... Read More

VHS : Innocent Sorcerers
"Innocent Sorcerers" (Niewinni Czarodzieje) was filmed in 1960 by Poland's famous director, Andrzej Wajda. It's an unusual story of love and lust. Two men, who could be considered ladies men, try to work out a scheme to get the attention of a woman at a bar. After several near fumbles, one of them some succeeds.

Throughout the story the man and woman play a game of cat and mouse as they battle for control of each other. The man, a young doctor, is intense, focused on the present and noncommittal. I was left with a feeling of emptiness watching the couple as they tried to find direction in their lives. Beneath the contentment that may have been present between them was underlying confusion of who was in control. The suspense in the film left me intrigued as the story progressed and the erotic tension ... Read More
