VHS : Rome Adventure

I saw this film in 1962 just days after returning from a tour of Italy. While not a classic film by any means, I was totally won over and was back in Italy again. Whenever I watch it and listen to Max Steiner's wonderful score I can practically smell Rome. It was titled 'Lovers Must Learn' here in the UK, and was never released on VHS here. I had to get a copy from the USA. I would like to add a plea to Warner Bros to release this film on DVD. It has a real nostalgia quotient attached to it, even more so due to the recent sad demise of Suzanne Pleshette.

VHS : The Birds
The Birds was the most ridiculous horror movie I've watched (and that includes The Evil Dead and other junk). Not only because of the lousy special effects - let's relegate those to the lack of technology. But the characters' reactions to the bird attacks often are preposterous. Let's pick the final scene when Miss Daniels hears a wing flutter and goes in the room at the top of the house, and see how many things are wrong with it:

1. Why would she go there?!
2. Why, after peeking into the room and seeing it chock-full of birds, would she enter and...
3. ... close the door behind her?
4. Why then, when the birds start attacking, does she make all sorts of uncoordinated gestures instead of getting the hell out?
5. Finally, her acting in that scene was ... Read More

VHS : the Ugly Dachshund
A co-worker told me about this movie and since I didn't find it at the local video rental store I purchased it for 9.99 on amazon. If you are a dog lover you will really enjoy this movie. It is so adorable! that poor Great Dane! What a riot to watch the mischief those Dachshunds caused.

VHS : Support Your Local Gunfighter
Though the titles are similar, as is some of the cast, this isn't a sequel to Support Your Local Sheriff. In some ways it's the complete opposite of Support Your Local Sheriff. In Sheriff Garner was good with a gun, in this one he isn't. In this movie he's Latigo Smith, much more akin to Maverick than his character in Sheriff, i.e., he's slower with a gun & somewhat of a coward.

Latigo arrives in Purgatory (a town name that would've been perfect in an episode of Maverick) on the run from a woman he's jilted & conned. He, literally, wants to get something off his chest...a tattoo with the name Goldie, the woman he's running from. Latigo happens to overhear Taylor Barton (Harry Morgan), a local mining baron, talking about putting a competitor out of business, Col. Ames (John Dehner who had appeared ... Read More

VHS : Geisha Boy
In THE GEISHA BOY, Jerry Lewis provides a performance with equal shades of subtlety and comic brilliance. The colourful backdrop of Japan is a treat to see, and the supporting cast is equally fine.

Small-time magician Gilbert "The Great" Wooley (Jerry Lewis) and his rabbit Harry are part of a USO tour of Japan, but the visit takes an unexpected turn when Harry catches the attention of a shy little orphaned Japanese boy and his concerned aunt. Gilbert is the only one who seems to draw the boy out of his sorrows, and pretty soon a romance has blossomed with Aunt Kimi (Nobu McCarthy), too. But will Gilbert be able to leave everything in order to be with them?

THE GEISHA BOY allowed Jerry Lewis the opportunity to play some dramatic material; his scenes with Robert Hirano (as the little Mitsuo Watanabe) ... Read More

VHS : Nevada Smith
This is an excellent western and a marvelous exposé of the bigotry of an era when many regarded Indians with the same contempt that unborn babies are seen today. To kill one, even as brutally and violently as Max Sand/Steve McQueen's mother's dies, is to do nothing wrong. As the son of an Indian mother and a white father, McQueen bridges the gap between the less-than-human Indian and the fully human white, when he seeks revenge for his mother and father's slaying.

Because Max has been reared in the wilderness, at the beginning of this film he's a blank slate, understanding nothing about either violence or the evil that violence can do to a man's soul, even when undertaken to revenge a wrong. Through most of the film, he uses and discards good people in the pursuit of his revenge. Only with a Cajun woman, who dies because of him, does ... Read More
