VHS : 1984
Michael Radford's adaptation of the well-known novel by Orwell is very faithful to its source material and very impressive. The cast is perfect in its leading trio: John Hurt as Winston Smith, Suzanna Hamilton as Julia and last but certainly not least in his last movie performance Richard Burton as O'Brien.

Orwell's dystopian vision of the future will be well known to most of us.
Winston Smith, the central character, lives in a totalitarian world, in which all pay homage to the ominous ever present "Big Brother" and, To sort of keep birth rates at an acceptable level, war is continually waged against some kind of enemy, that seems to change as much as wind direction whatever the fear mongers deem appropriate.

Inhabitants of this world are continually bombarded ... Read More

Out of Africa
The story of a Danish woman (Meryl Streep) who finds herself running a farm in Africa from 1913 after her husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) decides to opt out for the life of a hunter. The first half is brilliantly
paced and immaculately acted, but the greatness rather drifts away in the second half, somewhat aided by Robert Redford, who just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the film. Streep and her Danish accent are amazing, while Brandauer, Suzanna Hamilton, Michael Kitchen and Michael Gough offer really first-rate support. Intelligently scripted and beautifully shot on location by David Watkin, Out of Africa proves a moving, stimulating and entertaining experience. Winner of SEVEN ACADEMY AWARDS, including Best Film and Best Director.

I came in on this film late at night by accident and was immediately drawn in by its surreal, gothic feel. There were no acrobatic fight scenes, no revealing sex scenes and no unnecessary cgi. It was simply a tragic love story where you could actually feel the characters pain and sadness. The settings were like a dream... It was a beautiful poetic film that lingered in my imagination long after the film was over.

VHS : Brimstone & Treacle
Sweet words and the ability to lie with utter conviction. These are the tools that Martin Taylor (Sting) utilizes in order to bamboozle his way into the lives of total strangers. After initial failure, Martin "accidentally" bumps into Mr. Tom Bates (Denholm Elliott). Bates tries to give him the brush-off, but Martin is far too cunning for such a simple dismissal! Mr. Bates arrives home, where his wife, Norma (Joan Plowright) has been caring for their bed-ridden, brain-damaged daughter (Suzanna Hamilton from 1984). Home is not much of a refuge for Tom, as Norma is obsessed w/ their daughter's eventual return to normalcy. This both angers and frightens Tom, due to a little secret he is hiding from his wife. A secret that the daughter might somehow / some day remember. There's a knock at the door. Why, ... Read More

VHS : Hold the Dream
Hold The Dream is the story of Emma Harte's granddaughter and heir, Paula, and the way she tries to juggle business and her family. I started to say it's like a soap opera because of the suspense and backstabbing going on, but it's better than a soap because there is some conclusion. I would suggest buying A Woman Of Substance, too and looking at it first. It's set in the early 1900's and gives a background on Emma Harte. You'll understand Hold The Dream better. I love these movies. They are not boring, but are filled with excitement, intrigue and all the good and bad that make up this family. They don't make mini-series like this anymore. What a pity!

A 6 yr old "highly energetic" boy and a 9 year old "sophisticated" girl were both riveted by this beautiful film. Unique adventures, sympathetic characters and a fabulous location make this faithful rendering of Arthur Ransome's book a joy to watch. But be warned: I know kids who have been seriously inspired by this story!

8.Tess starring: Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, Leigh Lawson, John Collin, Rosemary Martin
directed by: Roman Polanski

VHS : Tess
While taking artistic liberties from the novel , Polanski's Tess is a very entertaining and beautifully filmed movie. The settings and costuming recreate the feeling of Hardy's Wessex as well as any filmed version of his works ever has.
Nastassja Kinski was beautiful in the role and although her acting can be somewhat wooden at times she does make a memorable Tess. The rest of the cast make up for her shortcoming by providing outstanding performances.
The pace tends to slow in certain parts of the film but if you are a fan of period films loosely based on classics you can do worse than spending some time watching this.

9.Barbara Cartland's Duel of Hearts starring: Alison Doody, Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Benedict Taylor, Billie Whitelaw

VHS : Barbara Cartland's Duel of Hearts
Filmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland. DUEL OF HEARTS is the story of Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody), who literally stumbles across the path of handsome Lord Vane Brecon (Benedict Taylor). Vane, who has been wrongfully accused of murder, hides a shameful family secret. Caroline, under the alias of Miss Fry, decides to enter the employ of his household in order to help him. A fascinating tale, filled with Cartland's always-enjoyable and potent mix of romance and heart-pounding adventure. The cast also includes Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Virginia McKenna, Billie Whitelaw, Beryl Reid, Adalberto Maria Merli, Suzanna Hamilton and Margaret Mazzantini.
