VHS : Elvis and ME
I watched this movie for the first time when it came out on TV when I was about five years old cuz my mom's a big Elvis freak. Almost twenty years later, it was on TV again and I watched it. I couldn't believe how much I remembered!! You can't help but fall in love with the movie. It's so good. It's hard not to believe what you're watching. I can just imagine the pressures Priscilla endured while being married to the King of Rock-n-Roll. And you have to wonder, why would a 24-year-old man be interested in a 14-year-old girl to begin with? Elvis was a little weird in that aspect, but he waited til they got married. Doesn't mean he wasn't getting it on the side while she was finishing her education and everything and staying true to him though. It's a great love story with a tragic ending and ... Read More

VHS : Landlord
Although this is Ashby's first directorial effort, you can already see many of the themes and recurrent fascinations of the man in this early work. The spare framing, the comfortableness with silences that would later emerge so brilliantly and patiently in Being There, and of course the offbeat and quirky performances, bringing to life characters that are wholly formed yet wildly funny and almost never otherwise shown on screen.

I also found the "European" edits (i.e., abrupt and sometimes surreal) to be creative, and of course the performances by many great character actors were superb. In particular Lee Grant stands out, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Her drunk scene at the tenement is a hoot. Also look for a very young, very clueless Robert Klein.

This has got to be one of the dumbest, most deliriously boring flicks ever made. Heck, watching it gave me a massive headache. I'm known for liking really cheesy movies, but this one is just plain stinky.

VHS : Reap the Wild Wind
Paulette Goddard was the frontrunner to play Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" until Vivien Leigh pipped her at the post. Four years later, Goddard finally got the chance to play another firebrand Southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille's REAP THE WILD WIND, a costume adventure with the emphasis on costume--and filmed in glowing early Technicolor.

Goddard plays Loxi Claiborne, the feisty manager of a ship salvage company in 1840s Key West, Florida. Loxi falls in love with Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne); but later finds herself caught under the spell of his attractive arch-rival, Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland). Playing one man off the other, Loxi gets caught in the middle of a dangerous battle between rival shipping companies, masterminded by scheming King Cutler (Raymond Massey).

VHS : Star Trek - The Original Series, Episode 66: Day of the Dove
This episode has an excellent premise, yet the sheer stupidity of the protagonists diminishes it. The Enterprise is sent to investigate the destruction of a human colony on Beta XII-A and a Klingon battle cruiser also appears. Sensors aboard the Enterprise detect explosions on the Klingon ship and the survivors beam down to the surface of the planet and capture Kirk and the landing party. Suddenly, Chekov goes berserk and attacks the Klingon captain Kang. When Kirk apparently meekly surrenders, Kang is contemptuous of him.
However, Kirk has tricked him, Scotty beams up the Enterprise crew and holds the Klingons in stasis until security can arrive in the transporter room. Later, when Kirk is talking to his prisoner Kang, objects are transmuted into sword-like weapons. It is here where the foolishness begins. Spock points out that ... Read More

VHS : At First Sight
I saw this on HBO one day and fell in love with it. I have since bought a copy and watch it once in a while, when I need a laugh. Jonathan Silverman and Dan Cortese (who co-starred together on The Single Guy) play a couple of guys who represent polar opposites among single guys- one is the timid romantic who has trouble getting girls, the other is a womanizing egomaniac who has no trouble whatsoever getting girls. The movie follows them around for a few days as they date, trade one-liners and dating philosophies, play hookey from work, etc. The movie's pretty lightweight as far as plot goes, but it's one of the funniest comedies out there, and Silverman and Cortese have great chemistry as wisecracking buddies. R. Lee Ermey (the drill sargeant from Full Metal Jacket) has a hilarious cameo as a weird guy who tries out his creepiness on Silverman but makes the mistake ... Read More
