VHS : James and the Giant Peach (Walt Disney Pictures Presents)
As a mother of two kids (ages 8 and 6), I have read nearly all of the Roald Dahl books multiple times in the past few years. We all love his writing - his stories are usually quite dark and yet offer a lot of humor, warmth and love as well. James and the Giant Peach is a wonderful story and well worth reading with your children. Mind you, there is the usual dose of Dahl meanness and nastiness but it is great story with many wonderful characters, budding relationships, and ultimately a very happy ending.

I was thus incredibly disappointed when we borrowed this DVD from our local library. The screenwriter took far too much liberty in changing things. I found it crude and insulting to the memory of Roald Dahl. If you have read the book, you know, for example, that the two ... Read More

In regards to "The Great Waldo Pepper" I agree with most of the DVD/vhs viewers: Lets re-release it widescreen!
I just watched it on a DVD I tranferred from VHS three years ago! The original VHS was recorded from the Disney Channel back in December of '05.
I did notice on the end credits it was filmed in Todd-AO. This means it was done in a widescreen Cinemascope process. The only difference here is that Todd-AO is filmed at 30 frames per second - so it would be easier to transfer to DVD and a higher quality as well. Maybe Universal is waiting to release it on Blu-Ray!? The Goodtime label seems to be a bootleg.

VHS : Atlantic City
As Lou, an almost prissily natty numbers runner certain that everything - even the ocean - has deteriorated, Burt Lancaster gives the performance of his life in Louis Malle's Canadian-financed film Atlantic City (opening today at the Imperial).

It might be fairer to call the picture a John Guare film, for Malle, best known in Ontario as the director of the unseen Pretty Baby, has entered entirely into his gifted playwright's episodic, jazzy view of the universe - Guare's script for Atlantic City is a commodious comic masterpiece, but it's also a serious fable about the dangers of dreaming.

Everyone in the picture, placed affectionately in an evocative Atlantic City devolving from tasteful faded glory to tasteless refurbished glitter, dreams of getting ahead. (Is Atlantic City a metaphor ... Read More

Very few movies are truly works of art. This is one of them. There are no explosions that throw bodies through the air, no sensational car crashes, no severed human limbs. Rather there is a plot that unfolds on its own good time, well drawn characters, excellently written dialogue, perfect atmosphere, and gorgeous photography.

Still, I understand why some might find the film objectionable. There is nudity, even nudity of a pubescent girl. There is open talk of sex. And some quasi moralists are more offended by that than by graphic violence. Sex, of course, is part of life and is legal, but it must not be shown or suggested very clearly. Murder, on the other hand, is illegal but is shown every night on TV with little protest from the moralists.

The acting here is seamless. Susan Sarandon ... Read More
