VHS : Lifeguard
Filmed in 1975, "Lifeguard" relays the story of an aging L.A. lifeguard (Sam Elliott) during the summer of '75. He suffers an early mid-life crisis when his friends and family continually reveal their disappoval of his career choice. This is heightened when he attends his 15-year high school reunion where he reunites with a recently-divorced ex-flame (Anne Archer). To complicate matters Elliot runs into a cute underage teen on the beach (Kathleen Quinlin) who makes him feel like an Adonis.

I remember cathing "Lifeguard" on tv sometime in the '90s and all I can remember is what a great film it was. I never heard of it before but the story took me right in and captivated me throughout. This is truly a secret gem from the 70s.

What makes it work so well? For one thing ... Read More

VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good performances by several familiar character actors of the era and features Ed Asner as the slave-trading bad guy. Due to "political correctness" I don't know if this movie could get made today, which is a shame. Highly recommended!

***** 1969. Adapted from Harry Lawton's Tell Them Willie Boy is Here, this film was written and directed by Abraham Polonsky. A brand new zone 2 DVD of it is now available at Amazon.fr in a pristine copy. Texas, 1909. American Indian Willie Boy is hunted by sheriff Robert Redford in the desert. Both will lose there their last illusions. One can either enjoy this western as a powerful drama or appreciate the way Abraham Polonsky comments one of the rare American myths. A masterpiece that needs to be seen at least twice to be fully understood.

VHS : Showdown (1973)
A very fine western,. Suspensful. A different western, but still classic in many ways. Dean Martin is truly great in this one. It is a very sad movie also. As a viewer you get very much engagedand involved. I came to hate Rocks Hudson's character, or not the charatcter itself but the way he behaved, his foolish stubbornes.

VHS : Valdez Is Coming

"He can shoot ... and he knows when to move" (the segundo)

Seeing this movie for the first time on the old TNT Western Theatre back in the early 1990s, don't know why I waited this long to enter a review. Also, I know nothing of altered or cut scenes from this movie, the Sharps rifle shoot has always been in whatever version I have viewed.

Former frontier sheriff, Roberto Valdez is an object of laughter and a person to be ignored, when he only seeks justice and money for the injured innocent. So when Bob Valdez, ex-Army Apache hunter--before he knew better--comes back, "they were still laughing ..., and then they began to die.

Based on the 1970 Elmore Leonard book of the same title, this film has to be one of the best, top five films, one can count ... Read More

VHS : Airport 1975
This sequel to the original "Airport" is much better written and acted. Unlike the first "Airport" this film actually has suspense and a plot. A small place crashes into a 747 (right into the cockpit, wouldn't you know) and either kills or severely injures the flight crew. A stewardess is left to bring the jumbo jet safely back to earth.

Charlton Heston gives a pretty good performance as the boyfriend of the pilot/stewardess and other cast members like George Kennedy (how did he get so lucky to be in all of these movies?) and Karen Black portray believeable, if not a bit predictable, characters. I will say the guys in the Salt Lake City air traffic control tower leave a lot to be desired, but they are the weakest of the film's cast.

In the end all is well and things work out. While ... Read More

VHS : Promises in the Dark
Marcia Mason and Kathleen Beller are unforgetable. I remember viewing this on television in the late 70's and watching it with my grandmother. Although it's a tearjerker, I always loved this movie. Marcia Mason is wonderful as the doctor and Kathleen (very much remembered for her role on Dynasty) does some of her finest work in this film as her patient who is dying. I am so happy to be able to buy this film and watch it again and again...
