VHS : Exit to Eden
What were they thinking? Perhaps director Garry Marshall thought he could do for S&M what he'd done for the women of the evening in Pretty Woman. Wrap up an edgy topic in a big cute bow, and through humor make it palatable, even entertaining, to the masses. But you thought wrong Mr. Marshall. Actually, it is a surprisingly entertaining movie, it is just that most of the humor is unintentional. You can't believe the movie got green lighted when it was so obviously doomed to be a disaster.

They took a novel by Anne Rice, written under the pseudonym of Anne Rampling (a name she chose as a tribute to actress Charlotte Rampling) and then they grafted on a totally gratuitous story about international jewell thieves and the cops (played by Dan Akroyd and Rosie O'Donnell??? and no, I am ... Tried to care about this elegant, opulent saga, but this movie just comes off as rather pointless. Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a radiant performance trying to get out from under these overstuffed rooms and overwrought sensibilities, but can't quite manage it.

Her main problem, in my opinion, Daniel Day-Lewis here plainly just doesn't cut it as a leading man. His emasculated, simpering deadpan, dispensing dialogue medicinally as so much cough syrup, completely fails to engage as a romantic figure. Trying to imagine Michelle's ravishing, vivacious character head over heels for him is more than a stretch. I've seen gunfighters with more chemistry than these two. Their first intimate scene, eek! Comes off like an accident on a crowded bus. This mis-casting is quite annoying, as this movie ... Read More

As for the DVD: Helen Mirren is just tops as an actress. Beyond her acting, the entire cast does a fantastic job, with a great story line.

However, the container, carrying the two disc set was damaged beyon repair. The two disc were not, however, damaged. I reported the damage to Amazon and they forwarded a case with a one disc. compartment----not a biggee. P.S.---We are now located in Fernley, NV, not Merced, CA. Don

After Susan Hampshire had played Fleur Forsyte, Becky Sharp, and Lady Sarah Churchill for the great BBC miniseries of the late 60s and early 70s it might have seemed inevitable that she was called upon to play her greatest part, Lady Glencora M'Cluskie Palliser, when the BBC decided to adapt Trollope's six "Parliamentary" novels over the period of three years beginning in 1974. Oddly enough, as she explains in an interview extra on this DVD, the part was originally slated to be played by Hayley Mills. But when Mills had to bow out for personal reasons, Hampshire was called to play the part she was almost born to essay, and the greatest treat in this terrific Victorian soap opera is watching her lovely and loopy "Lady Glen," the wealthiest titled woman in England who is yet so childlike and insecure she clutches a doll during ... Hello,
I am a person who really loves Chaplin, and own copies of almost every movie available from his Sennet days to "A King In New York". I usually play them from the earliest to the latest about once every year or two. My heart sinks as I approach "Limelight". I find it to be a trial to sit through. It seems to drone on and on, and be filled with bathos.
If I hear Claire Bloom say "Calvero" over again, and whine on and on about life, I will probably scream. Actually the best part of the movie by far is when Chaplin slaps her. This is what we wanted to do for the first 6 or 7 hours the movie appears to last. The only other highlight is of course Chaplin's encounters with Buster Keaton, although why we hear no one laughing during their music routine, I don't know. It really ruins it. I would say this movie ... Read More

I liked it. A very sweet and romantic film with a dramacit twist, as many would call a tear jerker. Yes, it makes us smile, cry and learn some lessons, lessons of love, and making what is right to amend what had been damaged. I thought the main couple was fine in their interpretations and chemistry. Even sadly, love always win! Think about it!
