Essential Matwork really provides a good foundation for a correct understanding of Pilates. I had been doing Pilates for about 6 months and found that there were some muscles I was not working the right way. The exercises can seem simple if you aren't doing them correctly. So yes, it takes patience to learn the right way, but that makes this video an excellent place to get started! Once you master these basic skills, going on to another Stott video will keep you from getting bored.

Wow, what a workout. It's all the basic pilates exercises, but w/ a twist. It's very challenging & you will definitely work up a sweat. I usually skip the very beginning until when she starts the hundred. It really pushes you so by the end, I usually screaming at her.

I have been doing Yoga daily for the past 9 years and have recently started to add Pilates into my program. Though I I have quite a few other excellent Pilates programs, there's no doubt that the Stott seem to have the best overall instruction. I just did this program "Ultimate Back Care" this afternoon and though it did move slowly because of all the instruction, it did deliver on it's promise. I was quite achy in my back before I did it and afterwards felt considerably better. I would have to agree (with another reviewer) that it would been ideal if there was one version with all the detailed instruction and another where it just flowed. I agree who said the buyer beware... I have rented mine from the library & agree they seem all the same. This one seems the same as the Firm & Fit, but little added challenge to each pose. The idea is good & well executed cues, etc. but after a few workouts, you feel deja vu. The chapters/exercises are: Warm up: breathing, pelvis placement, hip release (straight leg), spinal twist, cat stretch, scupula isolations, rib cage posture, cervical posture, ab prep & breast stroke prep Exercise: child's pose, hundred, half roll back, roll up, one leg circle, sitting spinal twist, rolling like a ball, ab crunch with 1 straight leg, oblique crunches, double leg stretch, scissors, bridge pose prep, plow, modified plank w/1 leg up, breast stroke, child's pose, saw, open leg roll like a ball, ... She does a great job explaining and demonstrating the proper techniques. I appreciate this in the beginning but after awhile the pace is way to slow. I still have not found a video that equals the workout I get from my YMCA class that only takes an 1/2 hour. I suggest the moria have two segments on the DVD. A get to know the workout segment and then the workout itself.

Good instructions during workout- reminds you to breathe correctly. However, I couldn't complete the workout because holding the bands all the time hurt my hands. My stomach was sore the next day so it did do something. If you don't have strong hands, you might want to consider something else.
