VHS : North to Alaska
Always known for his tough guy leading man roles, John Wayne takes a stab at a more comedic role with North to Alaska. It's 1900 in Nome and prospectors Sam McCord and George Pratt have struck it big with a claim that's bursting with gold. So with hopes of getting all the gold, McCord goes to Seattle with two goals, buy the necessary equipment and bring back George's fiance of three years. But in Seattle, Sam finds the fiance has married so he finds a different girl, a prostitute named Angel, with hopes of helping his friend out. But on the way back, Sam and Angel start to fall for each other, arriving back in Nome to find out claim jumpers are moving in. This was a lot of fun to watch with a storyline that doesn't rush in getting anywhere, letting the characters have fun with the somewhat ... Read More

Ann Seymour: "Do not attempt to confuse me by using words beyond my understanding."

Bess: "I am sorry, madame, but they are difficult to avoid."
~from "Young Bess" (1953)

Every generation has its own interpretation of the complex soul of Elizabeth Tudor. The 1953 film "Young Bess," starring Jean Simmons as the future Elizabeth I of England and Stewart Granger as Thomas Seymour, is a romanticized version of Margaret Irwin's historical novel. I read the book as a young teen, and first saw the film when it ran one night on the late movie back in the '70's. Although it is replete with 1950's technicolor glamor, "Young Bess" still surpasses many contemporary renditions of the life of Elizabeth I for its fairly authentic exploration of the unique ... VHS : Salome
Salome is not a movie that sticks close to the Biblical account of the story .The script by Harry Kleiner ,based on a story concocted by Jesse Lasky Junior ,embroiders the Biblical tale and makes a great many changes,,in particular by absolving Salome of all blame for the fate of John the Baptist ,the guilt for which is laid squarely at the feet of her mother,Queen Herodias(played by the excellent-as ever-Judith Anderson). It also ignores the account given by the eminent Jewish historian ,Josephus who claims she went on to marry two members of her own family ,Philip the Tetrach and Aristobulus .Provided ,however that you are not a stickler for such things as historical accuracy ,this is a ripe and enjoyable melodrama.

Salome -the lustrous Rita Hayworth -is banished from Rome by Caesar (a cameo from ... Read More

... I didn't feel he was really into his performance in this movie, the way he was in 'Scaramouche'. This movie, for me, was just 'okay', not horrible, not great, just somewhere in between. I own this movie, and I will watch it again, but I must say I'm not in any particular hurry to do so. I would like for the 2006 James Purefoy version to show up on dvd. As for this version, I imagine it will be on dvd once Purefoy's version comes out.

Part of my problem with this movie is (and it is not the movie's fault) I'm not a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor. She's okay, but I just can't get thrilled with her for some reason. And, Stewie Granger just didn't put himself into this movie the way he did in 'Scaramouche', at least I didn't think he did. I just felt like he didn't care that much about this movie to bother ... VHS : The Prisoner of Zenda
There is a category of film that Hollywood cannot, from time to time, resist making--that of the historical costume drama. Director Richard Thorpe took THE PRISONER OF ZENDA novel by Anthony Hope, updated and colorized the superior 1937 version with Ronald Coleman, and cast Stewart Granger in the double role as the King of Ruritania and his twin, cousin Rudolph. What marks both versions is the dashing swashbuckling that Errol Flynn first popularized in the early 30's. True, Ronald Coleman possessed a sense of dash that Stewart Granger could only emulate rather than stamp with his own screen persona. Granger is a distant lookalike cousin of the King of the mythical country of Ruritania, who is kidnapped by the evil henchman (James Mason) of the king's brother. Granger impersonates the king and falls predictably in love ... Read More

VHS : Sodom & Gomorrah
When I saw that this film was almost 150 minutes in length, I was curious to see how the film-makers expanded on a story that is only a few pages long in the book of Genesis. As it turns out, I'm kinda sorry I found out. Why? Because the story in this film bears almost no resemblance to that original story. Outside of the characters of "Lot" and his daughters, and the two cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, everything else is either seriously embellished or completely fabricated. In short, it is almost an entirely different story from the original.

Taken on its own, the movie is OK. Some of the special effects are weak, but I realize that it was made in the early 1960s and wasn't a huge budget film. The queen of Sodom, although a non-biblical figure, was played rather well by Anouk Aimee. Stewart Granger was ... Read More

VHS : Saraband for Dead Lovers
This is a lavish British film that attempts to tell the truly tragic tale of a German Princess who would go on to become the wife and captive princess of the uncouth boor who would one day be crowned as George I of England.

William of Celle and his wife Eleanore had a beautiful, pampered daughter, Sophia Dorothea. His younger brother, Ernest Augustus, ruled in the rival principality of Hanover. He was married to Sophia, daughter of the King of Bohemia. Together they had a number of children, the oldest of whom was George Lewis, an ugly, coarse, and boorish man, born to be a soldier, rather than a statesman or diplomat.

There came a time when Sophia Dorothea, as a result of some underhanded political intrigues, was forced into a loveless marriage with her first cousin, George Lewis, much to her and her mother's despair ... Read More

VHS : Last Hunt
The Last Hunt is one of those Westerns that somehow has gotten lost.It is a story of a time, when loosing sight of the roof-tops,was dangerous. The isolation,of the plains, bleeds men of moral behavior.Robert Taylor is Charley. In town he is bearable. On the prairie, where the town and laws and rules of the town are lost,Charley looses the decency and reason that makes folks civilized.
The Last Hunt is a great western. The systematic killing of the buffalo, which looks easy and real, looks that way because the buffalo killed during the making of this movie, were actually killed to thin down native herds in South Dakota. The killing of the buffalo provides a surreal cinematic backdrop,to a story of good guys and bad guys trying to disguise what is natural within them. This film should be on DVD for the following reasons:
1)Robert Taylor's performance ... Read More
