VHS : Ducktales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp (Disney Movietoons Presents)
When I saw this movie as a kid, it was without a doubt my favorite. However, after seeing the movie many years later, I've come to realize why critics refered to this as an "Indiana Jones rip-off". The film satisfies viewers with its amazing opening as Scrooge and gang travel in the middle of a desert to find the lost treasure of Coli Baba. Then after that, the rest of the film takes place in Duckburg. See where I'm going. This movie could've been so much more, but yet it lost its chance to not only gain a posisitve reputation among fans and critics, but also spawn a sequel or two (there were plans for several DuckTales movies following this one). Overall, its an entertaining movie for younger kids with the exception of some fans, but it falls short of capturing the true spirit of the DuckTales ... Read More

VHS : Space Adventure Cobra (Dub)
There seems to be some some disappointed folks with this movie, having high expectations but being let down as they watch it. There's good reason for this: this is the version that sucks.

This is the 1998 version brought over and dubbed by Urban Vision. The main villain's name is "Crystal boy" (really? yes.) and it's completely lame. I don't even know who does the music. It's an attempt to be more mainstream anime and more energetic. Unfortunately, the story is all over the place and makes little sense. The only thing I like better about this one is the type treatment for the title on the cover of the box - it's more dynamic and more easily identifiable.

However, back in 1995 Manga did a different version with a soundtrack by Yello (the guys who did "Oh Yeah" in Ferris Bueller's ... Read More

VHS : Black Magic M-66 (Dub)
This is a finely tuned entertainment engine that showcases excellent vehicular, 'bot and character designs. The protagonist has a nice normal feel to her: she can't leap fifty feet into the air and she doesn't carry a twelve foot sword--she doesn't even have a sword. She's a photo journalist on the trail of a hot story that just might involve some sort of military screw up. Even the androids, terrifying as they are, are designed with an eye towards making them much more believable than they might otherwise be. They are my favourite animé robots, and I place them amongst such fine company as Gort (The day the earth stood Still), Robbie (Forbidden Planet) and Rotwang's Robot (Metropolis, 1926)

For my Yen, M-66 boasts the best fight scenes of any animé, specifically a nighttime battle between ... Read More

VHS : Lily C.A.T.
I'm guessing that a lot of the people who have seen Lily C.A.T. are more anime people without a horror background. I have owned this movie on VHS for close to 15 years now, and I'm begging to see it released on DVD! This movie IS (if nothing else) a classic!

There are few anime titles that approach the horror genre in this manner. It is far more like an American horror from the 80's than a Japanese horror from any time frame.

If you grew up watching the 1980's space/underwater horror titles. Buy this now. You will get to see one of the rare instances where an anime pays homage to those great movies.

If you have seen "Leviathan" then you will recognize this horror. Though it happens in space, it is a very similar situation - but remember this is an anime that predates Akira - ... Read More

VHS : Vampire Hunter D (Dub)
This classic anime tells the story of "D" - a half vampire/ half human who has rejected his vampire heritage and now hunts and kills the vampires (and other monsters) who loosely rule the post-apocalyptic Earth.
The animation is good for it's time (originally released in 1985), the story is full of tension, with numerous surprises.
As others have noted, there is a follow-up video ("Bloodlust"), which has excellent animation qualities and a good story, but "D" loses a bit of the depth and complexity shown in this film. I do recommend seeing this first - it is both the earlier film and chronologically earlier in the story of "D", and it seems to me to make "Bloodlust"s improvements in animation quality even better.
Be aware, this is not for kids - there is quite a bit of blood and complex story line, along with ... Read More

VHS : 8 Man After: Perfect Collection
I have been a fan of 8th Man (as he was known in the United States) since the 1960's, when he had his very own tv series and was called Tobor. "8 Man After" keeps the original Japanese name for all the characters, including the eponymous cyborg hero ("Eito Man"). The action in this movie takes place some years after the death of the first cyborg to use the name 8 man, and the new robot is more complex, more troubled, and more human. Ultimately this 8 man is the most heroic of all his incarnations, and also the most exciting. The story is compelling and the images are beautifully drawn. Despite the usual grittiness and violence which we all have come to associate with anime, "8 man After" has an appealing ending which frankly I wish the writers had expanded upon. The 8 man character has SO MUCH potential, far beyond that of being the inspiration ... Read More

VHS : Rockin With Judy Jetson
Well, you'll want to get this if you're like me, and think Judy is totally hot. I have no clue as to when this film was made, or why, yet I seem to find Hanna-Barbera feature animated films popping up all the time on Cartoon Network, and I wonder if they were ever really in theaters or simply made for TV. I could easily believe that this was a made for TV or video movie, but at least it's all about Judy, and it's her original voice, or sounds like it at least. Unlike in the big screen Jetsons Movie, where they used a teen pop singer to voice Judy for the sake of bringing in more kids.
This is the story of how Judy meets her rock star idol, Sky Rocker, and tries to get him to sing a song she wrote at one of his concerts. Meanwhile, an evil Queen who hates music has a plot to put a stop to all things musical. When a secret coded message she ... Read More
