VHS : 8 Seconds
After being directed by Amazon's recommendation to "8 Seconds," and reading the reviews, I thought that this would be an enjoyable film and purchased it. I am not a big rodeo fan, but I do enjoy them once in a while; and I have been friends with several bull riders. While I enjoyed the film, I cannot say that it really helped me to know more about Lane Frost (portrayed by Luke Perry), his life, career, his relationships with other performers, or his marriage. Indeed, after watching the film, I found myself looking up more information about Lane Frost on the internet to help me make more sense out of the movie.

What I missed most in the film was the sense of Lane's apparent true love for both his wife and for bull riding. They are essentially implied; that is, the viewer must assume ... Read More

As my title states, this movie presents an interesting interpretation of end time events. The acting isn't great, but the biblical theology is pretty good with a couple of interesting side stories. Probably not one you'd have for your personal library, but worth renting if nothing else is in.

VHS : Great Balls of Fire
This comic book like biopic about singer Jerry Lee Lewis (Dennis Quaid) rise to fame and subsequent fall from grace after his marriage with his 13 years old cousin Myra (a very young and very good Winona Ryder) was discovered, is probably not terribly true to life, but it is still very entertaining. Quaid happily hams it up in an over the top performance that has to do more with caricature than with acting. Alec Baldwin adds to the fun in his cameo as Jerry Lee's cousin, preacher Jimmy Swaggart. There is a nifty, idealized pop reconstruction of small town America in the 1950s. And the music, of course, is great. Best scene: staid English journalists raising a scandal when the singer and his teen wife arrive.

The sound quality of my VHS copy is fine (and believe me, I'm hard to please in that area). Yes, this movie belongs on DVD in Dolby 5.1.

The story is so good, you'll swear it is fiction. But it isn't. A country girl from the Australian outback who becomes a world-famous opera singer? Come on! But it's all true.

The first half of the movie is her struggle and rise. From sneaking off the ranch to an audition (of which her father vehemently disapproves) to her scholarship to study singing in Paris--except that the person she's supposed to study with knows nothing about this and refuses to take her. How she gets this woman's attention is priceless.

The meeting with the young doctor after her debut at the Monte Carlo opera. Her big night and no one to share it ... Read More

K, I really want everyone to see this, for the simple fact that my fave actor's in it (who will remain unnamed for personal reasons ^_^ LOL). I must say that it's the stupidest, most terrible movie I've ever seen; I loved it! The "low- budget cult weirdness", the bad writing, the situation, everything about it reminded me of some of the B (Z actually) movies I'd seen before, only it was made in '95. Heehee, this is currently my fave live-action movie.
