VHS : 1900
The essential question (and complaint) I have with Bernardo Bertolucci's "1900" is, "Why is it more than 5 hours in length?". We suffer from too many characters, too many repetitive sequences, and too much gratuitous excess. I am not a proponant of grading everything by its' length but it is, in my opinion, a valid criteria of artistic acheivement. My favorite work of fiction ("The Cypresses Believe in God") is over 1000 pages long yet its' brillance was the way the author was able to personalize the labyrinth that was Spanish politics in the 1930's. Most accounts of the Spanish Civil War merely focus on the major political parties involved in the struggle. The complexity of the subject required a deeper explanation. On the other hand, my favorite TV show ("The Twilight Zone") "jumped ... Read More

VHS : Suspiria (Ws)
The work of Italian director Dario Argento may truly be an acquired taste. This tale of an American girl arriving at a European ballet academy and discovering its sinister secrets is interestingly executed but may leave viewers perplexed.

"Suspiria" carries a reputation of being a great horror film. It's not brilliant, really, but it's also not the worst thing on celluloid. I understand its importance as an international horror film. It's known for it's bizarre use of vivid colors and its over the top production design. Those are the most memorable things about this movie.

The best thing in this film is the first murder which occurs about ten minutes or so into the film. It's pretty sensational. But the film overall lacks a lot in substance and story. It's basically a ... Read More

This is the first film of peter greenaway that i have seen (his work has recently been recommended to me) and i found it to be quite an interesting experience..
This is a movie which follows the desintigration of an american architect who comes to italy with his wife to open an exhibition on a lesser known yet highly respected architect from france... The movie opens almost immediately into a metaphoric level when the husband and wife talk about the carniverous nature of architecture on a train after making love (later we discover that they conceived a child).. and the metaphors and almost hallucinatory nature of the movie continues to the very end of the film.. Dennehy's character has several parallels throughout the film - he is compared to boulley (the architect he is honoring), Augustus, and ... Read More

In a nutshell, this movie is about the changing gender roles. One reviewer suggested watching this on a rainy afternoon and I agree. It will certainly make you nod off and maybe then all of the rich symbolism will make sense as you sleep - that, or give you horrible nightmares. I enjoy great films by Antonioni, Pasolini and the rest who embody symbolism at its best (in my opinion) but this one....not one of my favorites. I gave it four stars for originality but subtracted one for the long stretches of boredom and lack of real plotline (it's just one weird scene after another). Here's my take on the film for what it's worth. We meet Lafayette (Gerard Depardieu) as he wakes in this nightmarish vision of NYC of the 70s. He makes his way to his job (stage hand for a feminist group that does performance art) carrying ... Read More

This was an interesting film about a young girl (a rather dispicable character) who leaves home after a phyical altercation with her mother and hits the road with her boyfriend and a male companion with the intent of finding a new life in Tel Aviv and of their adventures along the way. The cinematography was great but I was very much disapointed to find that the video was not really in widescreen as advertised. If I had known I never would have purchased it. The film should be released on DVD in it's full screen size. I give it only two stars because of my dispointment.
