This film is still not on dvd, and it should be. This movie is really a guilty preasure, in that, it is all the things a movie should not be. Historically inacurrate, and all Hollywood from the get go. But, that was the way it was until audiances became too sufficiated for bad directing. Despite all that, I love this movie, because of those reasons. The truth would only paint Tracys character much differently, and we might end up hating the hero more then the indians. There are many lines in this film that are memorable. My favorite is when Tracy says "If she gives you any trouble, stick her in the rump with a bannoet." My second favorite line was so laughable I still laugh as I'm about to write it. After the indian maccacre is over Tracy is trying on the local foot wear and in an angry ... Read More

I enjoyed this movie as a kid, but watched it recently and found it to be bloated and dated and not all that funny. However, the final two minutes are one of the most profoundly spiritual moments in the history of cinema.

The lesson learned by Spencer Tracy's character, that life is inherently absurd and laughter is the best medicine for melancholy, is one that we can all benefit from. When sadness strikes, I watch the final two minutes several times in a row, and experience a healing catharsis.

This all sounds a little pompous and pretentious (even to me), but it is true nevertheless.

VHS : Plymouth Adventure (1952)
I enjoyed "Plymouth Adventure" very much although it is a flawed film. Something is missing. We learn very little about the persecution of the Pilgrims and their beliefs except that they pray "standing upwards" and are very clean. They even wash with the ship's limited drinking water which causes consternation among crew members. It was especially difficult for me to believe that the wife (Gene Tierney) of Pilgrim leader, William Bradford (Leo Genn) would prefer the ship's bloated, craggy, bitter, and alcoholic captain (Spencer Tracy) over her good-looking and articulate husband. The urbane and darkly handsome Leo Genn became well-known as a fine British film and stage actor with the "black velvet voice" and had already received critical acclaim for his excellent acting (and wit) in "Quo Vadis" (1951) and "Henry V" (1944). ... Time has not been kind to "Tortilla Flat" (1942). Spencer Tracy, John Garfield and Hedy Lamarr are regrettably miscast in this disappointing adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1935 novel. However, Frank Morgan earned an Oscar nomination for his standout performance as the dog-loving hermit - the best aspect of director Victor Fleming's misguided comedy-drama. The Steinbeck realism is hopelessly lost amid the MGM gloss.

VHS : A Guy Named Joe
A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight training and combat. Ted eventually ... Read More

VHS : Inherit the Wind
This is the second in my "series" of films for which I am truly thankful, the problem with that being that it is the first one that most of you will be reading. Such is life. In my first review, which was actually more of a thumbnail appreciation of the original production of THE THING (a film that literally shaped the rest of my life), I mentioned that there was another film that had taught me an important lesson at the age of 12, one that I hope I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Well, INHERIT THE WIND is that film.

Directed by Stanley Kramer, INHERIT THE WIND gives us a very fictionalized account of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial in which a man was tried and convicted for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in a Tennessee school. Virtually all of the names and locations have been changed as have many of the pertinent facts because ... Read More
