Excellent film showing a woman of courage and strength in a situation out of control. Much better than the special effects junk in which the strong woman relies on impossible gymnastics and weapons. There are many real life stories like this--for example, many of the woman affected by the Chernobyl disaster were put in possitions similar to this.

VHS : Clara's Heart
This film is more than it wants to be. The critic and cynic in me would gleefully join Mr. Marshall Fine in enumerating the many ways this film tries to manipulate its audience. First on my list would be the score by Dave Grusin which acts as a musical leash to pull the audience where they probably would have gone anyway. But that is where I will stop, because although the film does everything in its power to convince us it's the cinematic equivalent of Prozac, it betrays this image by containing subtle, powerful insights that set it apart from its saccharine ilk. There IS something different here, you just have to know where to look. Its not so much about what Clara does for David, a lot of his problems remain after her departure... What is special about "Clara's Heart" is that its about the ... Read More

I must say, this is a fabulous romantic comedy. It's flirty and fun, while still maintaining a level of class. Despite have a time-loopy premise to it, the primary focus is on chivalry and the timelessness of 'classic romance'. Another great quality of the film is that it is CLEAN. This is something that can be shared with younger viewers without having to experience the awkwardness of watching a sexual scene with an 11 year old. Hugh Jackman's performance is just fantastic. He truly brought his character to life and into this modern world. Meg Ryan did a wonderful job as well. Overall a spectacular film, and one I would highly recommend!!!

VHS : True Stories
The extremely influential band Talking Heads had begun to self-destruct by 1986, and in truth the film TRUE STORIES is more a David Byrne project than a Talking Heads project--but regardless of who-what-where-when it is a quietly bizarre satire of all things Texas, as any one who has spent time in a small Texas town can attest.

The town in question is Virgil, a community experiencing growing pains due to the advent of the computer industry and a new mall that is drawing folks away from the downtown area. The Texas Sesquicentennial provides a loose theme: promoted as a "Celebration Of Specialness," events include a fashion show, a parade, and most importantly a talent show. Along the way Byrne, acting as a sort of niave visitor-interviewer-narrator, more or less introduces us to the more ... Read More

Yeah, I know that the critics hated it, and I can sometimes find reasons to agree with their assesments. But, I am mysteriously drawn to this farce. The notion of mixing Renoir, New York City "artworld" sophistication, the "new" South and the old, spiced with as many stereotypical characters as possible takes theatre of absurdity into an uncharted territory. I love how over the top are the characters; how the plot while seemingly a series of unconnected events manages to collect itself, and how the resolution is somewhat surprising.

No S&B is not a great film, maybe not even a good one, but it has the appeal of a cult film that make me want to watch it again to try and figure out what the film maker is trying to tell me. On the way I discover another joke that I have missed, or I laugh again at the familiar ... Read More

VHS : Swimming to Cambodia
Swimming to Cambodia is fundamentally an autobiographical monologue, and one only peripherally connected to the (excellent) film that inspired it, The Killing Fields. Those unfamiliar with Spalding Gray's works may be perplexed to read his self-centered, occasionally manic or depressive, and deeply personal ramblings. This book is, in a way, misleading; even more so than Shakespeare's plays, Gray's monologues are meant to be watched, not read. It's difficult to imagine his drawling New England accent, the ironic and self-deprecating humor, and the incredible honesty with which Gray would sit at a table with a glass of water and share, fundamentally, himself.

Swimming to Cambodia is not the first of what became his signature internal dialogs, but as it is the earliest work available on film, it's a good place to start. Those ... Read More
