VHS : When We Were Kings
in this viewer's eyes, ali is the greatest sports figure of our time. as i watched this powerful documentary, other sports heroes of mine -- michael jordan, lance armstrong -- faded away in comparison to the athletic skill, courage, wisdom, presence and sheer humanity of ali. focused on ali's fight against foreman in zaire, this documentary is about that and much more. it captures ali at his peak. the humor. the intelligence. the courage. the honesty about race in america. the willingness to stand up for his beliefs at great cost. the phenomenal, unmatched boxing skill. this movie makes clear that ali transcended his sport to become an icon and leader across the globe.

this is one to watch for inspiration, for entertainment, to remember and enjoy, and to show your kids.

VHS : Sonny Liston: The Mysterious Life & Death of a Champiom
As I was growing up, I always considered myself a quasi-Boxing historian. One part of my interest in Boxing was the lineage that followed the champions in the various weight classes. Of course, the lure of the Heavyweight Division was too much to resist - therefore I sought to learn about the various champions. Sonny Liston, who was Heavyweight Champion from 1962 through 1964 was someone who was well known to me. Being a Muhammad Ali fan, I knew him as the man who Ali (then Cassius Clay) dethroned for the Heavyweight title. I also knew him as the fighter who defeated the first two-time Heavyweight Champion, Floyd Patterson. There was also a wealth of stories that were told about Sonny Liston- namely his alleged connections to organized crime, his alleged participation in both of ... Read More

VHS : The Monkees - Head
I remember when the Monkees show was on Saturday morning reruns, and my siblings were surpised that I enjoyed it despite my very young age. In the age of "MASH" (actually 1-2 years before) there were indeed a great many persons who conflated mere juxtapositions and semi-random non-sequiters with the sense of anomie they felt at the time, and were desperate to see expressed in some way.

Funny, but my 4 OR 5-year old self (although purely in terms of chronological age!) seemed to be the ideal audience for this kind of writing. As a child, I could delight in pure zaniness for its own sake, quite unconcerned about the lack of moral convictions betrayed by the writers (the perfect example is when the film has a woman being punched out, purely for the supposed comedic value of doing so [in ... Poor Sonny Liston. He told his manager, in a moment of relaxation, that in one round he would make Ali pay for his big mouth, or in his own eloquent words: "dust his dome off". One of the lessons Ali taught us is that we can never know what's coming, no matter how certain things seem.

Watch this fight (or slaughter, depending on your perspective) and ask yourself if you have ever seen a human being move as a fast as the young Cassius Clay does in this fight as he shreds the fearsome Liston. I haven't. Each movement of his body happens precisely as he wants it to, and as fast as he wants them to. And all those cute "this was a fix" theories just don't fit with Liston's enraged attempts to. As Ali put it later, "If he wasn't trying to win, he's a better actor than I was."

VHS : Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee
I actually did not watch it once I became aware that it was not the film I was looking for. Amazon made a mistake in listing William Klein as the Director - so beware. Through some investigating I've determined that the DVD I intended to purchase is a documentary titled "Ali The Greatest: 1964-1974." I've seen clips of it and have read many very favorable reviews - it looks outstanding...
