VHS : Sun Valley Serenade
This is one of my favorite "feel good" movies of all time. A lot of fun (with a YOUNG Milton Berle) and some of the BEST mucic ever filmed. Have a heart and bring this out!!!!

VHS : One in a Million
I'm not really that big a fan of Sonja Henie's skating. Rather, it's her fresh-faced screen presence which I find so engaging. Sonja Henie was a Norwegian skating darling who won the figure skating gold medal in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. In 1936, she successfully transitioned from skating into film acting with the delightful ONE IN A MILLION. Off the top of my head, the only other woman athlete who managed to finagle her sports stardom into a lucrative film career is gorgeous swimmer Esther Williams (although I could do without her swimming gimmicks as well). ONE IN A MILLION was only one of the many musical comedies which bombarded Hollywood in this era, but it stood out not only because of Sonja Henie's fine debut, but because of the acting of the rest of the cast, the lighthearted ... VHS : Iceland
In the wake of the brilliant Sun Valley Serenade, Fox again cast Sonja with John Payne under the helm of H. Bruce Humberstone. Iceland is not as good as Sun Valley, but her skating is her best. The music is first rate, though the words hilarious(promoting the girls to let soldiers have fun with them, they might not come back hehehe). Sonja proves once again that she was a comic talent, but the stagefarce-plot is much too much at times... However; the musicalnumbers are a treat and u should always watch it for that reason alone.

VHS : My Lucky Star
This is a real holiday confection, with an all-star cast - Sonja Henie, Richard Greene, Cesar Romero, Joan Davis and Buddy Ebsen. Roy del Ruth is at the helm and naturally delivers plenty. The musicalnumbers are out of this world and the comedy of Joan Davis hilarious and not A BIT DATED. The jet-set aura is perfect and it`s Hollywood at its most Hollywood. No wonder Sonja was Fox`s box-office queen with the young Shirley Temple.

It`s one of the very best musicals of the 30s.

Okay, Sonia Henie may not be the best actress ever, but I think she does a plenty adequate job here. After all, she's playing a midwest school teacher who is caught unawares that she has been entered into a nation-wide talent search for "The Girl of the North". Given this is the role she's playing, the role of a school teacher who is suddenly thrust into the limelight, what kind of acting experience do you need? I felt her portrayal was realistic! I mean, one day you're a school teacher, the next day, your acting in movies? Of course you are going to be awkward, not to mention scared out of your wits.

Ty was just outstanding. He was funny, charming, and a bit of Cyrnao De Bergerac thrown in (when he's writing love songs for the other guy to sing to the girl who he loves).

VHS : Thin Ice
After One in a Million 1936, Sonja Henie was fast becoming a Hollywood star in the front rank. In THIN ICE she is teamed with her then-boyfriend Tyrone Power and the chemistry is explosive... It`s a Cinderella-story, but given the full treatment by 20th Century-Fox - it`s almost like an MGM extravaganza :-)

The skating is good and Joan Davis as a comedy relief is a winner. As a matter of fact I can`t understand the fuzz they make about the Astaire&Rogers musicals over at RKO... I much more prefer the Sonja Henie`s at 20th Century-Fox... They are never OVERLONG and never outstays their welcome:-)

The affair with Power never ended in marriage; he was bisexual and Sonja found out... When he married French Annabella she was reportedly deeply hurt though they remained friends up until Power ... Read More

VHS : It's a Pleasure
This is an awful flick centering on Sonja Henie falling in love with a tough and gruff ice hockey player. Henie always wanted to be filmed in technicolor and this was her first color film. By 1945, when this was filmed, her movie career was on a sharp decline The plot of this film is typical and formulaic of all her films, but this one has an especially trite script, with moronic dialogue and perfunctory "acting." In her earlier Fox films, Sonja looked youthful, cute and perky, and despite her thick accent and abominable acting skills, she could get through a film. By now, Sonja looks old and tired (the technicolor helps in revealing her age); she is therefore less cute and tolerable. In short, the film is hard to sit through. There is absolutely no chemistry between Michael O' Shea and Sonja (at least the ... Read More

I must admit, I'm not that much of a Sonja Henie fan but I always like the MEN in her movies. She's no kind of actress but she is often surrounded by a fine supporting cast which make her films worthwhile. In this case, it's Cesar Romero as a night club performer who, along with the rest of the cast, is trying to save an old hotel from the wrecking ball. He is absolutely hilarious (even by today's standards). Good big band music by Woody Herman and the always beautiful Carole Landis appears in one of her last films. This (and currently none of her other films) is not available on DVD.

Ice skater Sonia Henje was one of Fox's big, big stars back in the Great Depression... Her particular charms don't hold up well over the years, though, and modern audiences may simply find her too cuddly and bland to hang with in films like this. Apparently this plot-heavy romantic comedy was meant to show her dramatic range, but it's a real snoozer... Henje had an elfin, Bjork-like quality to her... but this fluffy, uneventful film was certainly no "Dancer In The Dark."

Forget the skating and the plot, for me the best part of the film is the musical speciality number, 'War Dance of the Wooden Indians', which features rare footage of Raymond Scott & his Quintette. Of particular interest and note is Scott's highly talented drummer, Johnny Williams, the late father of John Williams, the movie theme composer ( 'Star Wars', etc.). Pure magic.
