Chuck in fine form as a crusty sodbuster but a bit dour throughout. Earnest performances help carry it along but it's not quite entertainment, is it ? I don't think I can recommend buying it but should prove a worthwhile curiosity as a Wednesday night rental.

VHS : Rough Night in Jericho

This is a very enjoyable movie for western buffs of the mid-1960's before Hollywood forgot 'how' to make good westerns.

The cast is sensational comprised of many seasoned and well known actors with one of my all time favorites, George Peppard, turning in a strong performance. George has the role of a man forced to take a hand literally in a battle for a town, one with which he tried to avoid. But Dean Martin plays such an unscrupulous and moral bankrupt part that ole Dino eventually brings the roof down onto his head through Peppard, whereby Dino loses everything.

This is a good way to wile away a few hours while being entertained, there just are no bad actors in this unusual and fine western. Great fun.

Semper Fi.

VHS : Dr Strangelove
A very intelligent yet hilarious look at the insanity of war and those responsible for waging it in the nuclear age. Full of 4 Star performances by Peter Sellers (in multiple roles), Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott and Slim Pickens, the epitome of the commie-fighting cowboy

The behind-the-scenes companion DVD is just as much of a treat as the film itself: the set designers made educated guesses as to the interior of a B-52 bomber, and turned out to be so accurate that the Air Force got concerned and Stanley Kubrick was worried that the FBI would come after him; Peter Sellers was originally set to play the Slim Pickens role in addition to the President, Group Captain Mandrake, and Dr. Strangelove -- but a dispute with Kubrick, Sellers own near-exhaustion from playing 3 other roles, plus an "accident" all conspired to allow ... I saw this movie, when it first landed in theaters. It is a little western. Will Penny was(is) a little Western--Will Penny is great--Tom Horn is less than great--Steve M. wants you to beleive he is like the real Tom Horn...I found it all very pretendious--McQueen should have done better---they say he was feeling bad--sickness that would end his life--Steve was a great actor--throw this movie and his last movie(the hunter) out--watch Steve in Nevada Smith--Bullitt---Love with a proper Stranger--Cincinnati Kid--Sand Pebbles--The Mag Seven--The Great Escape--Forget Tom Horn and The Hunter because I think he was sick when he made these films--there's only one Steve Mcqueen and who ever he WAS is not in these forgetable films--

8.Ballad of Cable Hogue starring: Jason Robards, Stella Stevens, David Warner, Strother Martin, Slim Pickens

VHS : Ballad of Cable Hogue
Confounding expectation, Peckinpah's follow up to "The Wild Bunch" is a broad comedy. The humour is on a pretty juvenile level though and a scene in the middle where a drunken priest (David Warner) consoles a grieving woman is particularly idiotic and demeaning to women (one could write a whole thesis about Peckinpah's misogyny and generally warped attitude to women). Despite this, Peckinpah does recreate the atmosphere of an old Western town and extends the boundaries of the Western genre.
