A long way from the Hollywoodised version of a Lonesome Dove sequel seen in `Return from Lonesome Dove', this is Larry McMurty's riposte to the way the Studio handled that sequel. Where `Return..' dealt with the cattle barons and themes of redemption and wholesome endings, this is a stark and realistic portrayal of the West. Here, the violent men of the burgeoning West are a dying breed (no pun intended) and that sense of a time in history passing is present throughout the whole movie.
Captain Call is now a bounty hunter - past his best, failing eyesight and getting old, but still with his own inherent sense of what's right intact. The movie is a manhunt, for a young Mexican killer - a boy from a good family who was captured by the Apache and was bad ever since. For the trip, Call ... Read More

VHS : 'night, Mother
Read some of the other reviews and you'll know the basis of the story. But this kind of film is not for everyone. The story line is difficult to say the least. A woman determined to kill herself and the mother (who loves her more than anyone else in this world) trying desperately to find a way to stop it from happening. If suicide is too distressing a subject for you, do not watch this film. If you are thinking of suicide, do not watch this film. It evidences how someone can convince themselves that this is the right choice (which it is not), but hopefully it also points to the fact that a suicide always deeply, adversely and irreversibly affects someone else in this world, even if it's just the person who finds the body (I know of which I speak). This movie may be boring for some, but only ... Read More

VHS : The Straight Story
In 1999, one of the most unusual pairings in Hollywood history formed to make a film telling the story of Alvin Straight's odyssey: David Lynch and Walt Disney Pictures. Lynch, arguably one of film's more daring storytellers, the mind behind Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, is absolutely the very last filmmaker I would ever have believed to team with Disney, except perhaps David Cronenberg. His films often navigate the darkest waters of the human experience with an unflinching eye for images both disturbing and nightmarish, and so naturally the idea that he'd done a film for Disney, a G-rated film at that, I could scarcely believe it. And I absolutely had to see for myself what could come of this most unexpected collaboration.

The Straight Story opens with Alvin Straight (played to perfection ... Read More

As a substitute teacher in a middle school English class, I was left this movie to show the class. I knew nothing about it, but I got caught up in its innocent (but never simple-minded) charms. I had to stay late after school to see how it ended! I did not know that Disney had returned so strongly to G and PG rated movie-making. Yes, it is a bit sentimental, but life needs a bit of that, and it offers plenty of food for thought for grown-ups too. A genuine surprise -- and pleasure.

Great movie for family night. Cissy Spacek did a great job portraying Loretta Lynn and kept me entertained the whole time.
Anyone who loves music should see this movie and would know how truly tough it is to break into the music business; this movie definately shows what it takes to make it famous.
Anyone who was or is poor can associate with the story this movie tells.
This is not a documentary but it does show a lot of history on Loretta Lynn and is enjoyable to watch...definately not boring!

VHS : Place for Annie
I had to watch this movie in my Child Development & Psychology class. I must say, it gets to one's heart easily. I was one of the few that actually cried in class. The acting was rather decent; it was an enjoyable cast. Annie was so adorable! I really loved the interaction between everyone and Annie's biological mother... It was an interesting take on things. It was rather sugar-coated in that department, though. Nevertheless, it's a good movie to sit down and watch for a few good cries.
