VHS : Supergirl (1984)
"Supergirl" thrilled me when it opened back in 1984. Along with Wonder Woman and She-Ra, Supergirl was part of an era of female superheroines. "Supergirl" is a true camp classic. It marked Helen Slater's debut (and subsequent departure) from the silver screen. Faye Dunaway could've shouted,"No more kryptonite wire hangers!" but she's close enough. "Supergirl",along with "Puma Man",is one of the cheesiest superhero movies ever made.

"Supergirl" opens on the heroine's homeworld, with her mother Mia Farrow&her mentor Zaltar (Peter O'Toole, hammy as ever) They need the Omegahedron to restore their world. Supergirl,a.k.a. Kara,is sent to Earth. Her cousin Superman is mentioned, but never makes an appearance, since the late Christopher Reeve wanted nothing to do with this movie. Kara confronts ... Read More

VHS : Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973)
IF one could ever possibly dream that Hitler and the Nazis could be made into a camp send-up, then this movie is the dream become reality!! I have never laughed so hard in my life. Although based on REAL events that took place in Hitler's Bunker, there is obviously a GREAT deal of theatrical license at work in the dialogue. You'll never believe what comes out of these people's mouths! When Alec Guinness declares that there is "no shortage of cream" in the Bunker, I just completely lost it... It's nowhere near as accurate as Downfall, but who needs accuracy when you've got an over the top Alec Guinness chewing up scenery and screaming at the top of his lungs. It's an absolute LAUGH RIOT!! Buy it, even on VHS.

VHS : Three Musketeers (1974)
This remake of the old black and white film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's « The Three Musketeers » misses the main point of the book, maybe even two main points. It misses the gallant courtly politeness that is nothing but hypocrisy in the mouth of Cardinal Richelieu who appears as a bad loser when he is an elegant plotter who never loses because his short term defeat is a victory in the long run, a victory of the main political objective of his that the film misses completely. In this 17th century, with King Louis XIII, the father of the Sun King Louis XIV, the French state is starting to centralize and to conquer real state power, hence to move out of feudal allegiances that are too vague, loose and easy to betray to build a modern state on. And what is essential in this situation, the autonomy of ... Read More

VHS : Young Winston
Young Winston is the story of Winston Churchill. It begins with him being sent off to school at about six, but spends much of its time with him as a young officer in the British Army. The best part to me was the episode during the Boar where he was captured and then escaped. I've been to the spot where he was captured and it was rendered very well in the movie. Indeed it was to see this event that I bought the movie and I was not dissappointed.

Although he had a craving for publicity and perhaps over stated his own abilities, he was certainly no coward.

6.Hawkeye: Pilot starring: David Macniven, Duncan Fraser, David MacKay, Dave 'Squatch' Ward, Michael Berry

VHS : Hawkeye: Pilot
I met and married my very own 'Hawkeye' about five years after this show came and went. It was really enjoyable, entertaining TV, oh, so much better than horrible staged 'reality shows' and everything else that's on. Recently my outdoorsy husband was extolling the virtues of Lynda Carter, and I said 'hey -- do you remember that show she was on -- Hawkeye?' Indeed he did! So this will be a fitting anniversary present -- only I wish it were a DVD!!!!

7.Wuthering Heights (1992) starring: Juliette Binoche, Ralph Fiennes, Janet McTeer, Sophie Ward, Simon Shepherd

VHS : Wuthering Heights (1992)
It's a bit of a disaster, this movie. I thought I ought to try and balance out the 5-star reviews that top the pile of most recent comments with a few of my own before anyone actually buys the DVD. Rent it first, if you still can, and see what you think. Like any movie from a book, it's bound to draw comparisons with the original story. If you're not familiar with the story you might think oh, it's a bit odd, but not so bad. If you are familiar with the story but you've never been to Yorkshire and met Yorkshire people, you still might think it's ok. If you can really get inside Bronte's Yorkshire, and the character and temperament of people you are likely to meet there, this picture is a joke. I'm sure Miss Bronte would titter at this effort to dramatize her novel. Juliette Binoche is woefully miscast and her ... Read More

VHS : Four Feathers
This version of "The four feathers" is excellent, the story is much deeper than the newest version (starring Heath Ledger).
Other reviewers have told you what the story is about, so I won't go into that.
This movie has an excellent cast including the following: Beau Bridges, Jane Seymour, and Robert Powell.
All of the actors do an excellent job at making you believe that they are who they are.
The battle sequences leave more than a little to be desired, but they are excellent for the day.
The Love story is very believable and does not include any sexual scenes or unecessary nudity.
The man who plays the father is also very good, and I'm glad for all of the back story on why Beau Bridges character is the way he is.
Overall, the story is really very good, but it's battle sequences ... Read More

VHS : How to Get Ahead in Advertising
This movie is a riot. Richard E Grant gives an amazingly intense performance. His entire role seems to consist of nothing but brilliantly scabrous monologues. His acerbic take on everything around him starts at a fever pitch and then giddily topples over into outright inspired lunacy. See this film if for no other reason than to get a glimpse of him naked save for a kitchen apron, gleefully stuffing raw chickens down the toilet drain and all the while explaining, " Everything I do makes sense, everything i do has a reason!"

I prefer this style of over the top attack much more than the drier and more subtle (!) mode employed by both writer-director Bruce Robinson and Richard E. Grant in their first collaboration, WITHNAIL & I.

The heights of comic outlandishness achieved in HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING is ... Read More
