VHS : Seventh Cross
Seven men escaped from Westhofen, but just one of them George Heissler will surmount all the obstacles to find at last, to materialize this dream.

This movie tells us about the multiple difficulties that George will have to feat in order to survive. Struggling and absorbing episode based on real facts in Germany 1936, when dissent was already considered a serious evidence of sedition and betrayal against the totalitarian state.

Impeccable acting of Spencer Tracy and fine direction of Fred Zinnemman.

VHS : The Story of Dr. Wassell / Movie
This movie I consider among my favorites. It is a true story of a doctor
who ended up on Java and saved many wounded men who were rejected entrance
into a ship leaving for safety because they could not get up and walk. It is
an amazing story and I am hoping someone will get it transfered to DVD before
it is beyond saving!

VHS : Heaven Can Wait (1943)
Hmmm. This movie could have been very cute, and has several fine and comical parts. Unfortunately, too many things don't follow or are clumsily explained, not too mention it should be a good 15 minutes shorter. For me, it would have been a much better story if all of Ameche's so called "sins" were only misunderstandings/misperceptions
from his squareish family (as many seem to be). I was fully expecting them to explained as such by the devil himself at the end, and that he would fully realize his fine character as the devil boots him to heaven.
But if i'm supposed to understand that he really sinned, why is he going to heaven, and what sense does that make alongside his doting relation to his wife? I think this movie is either generally misunderstood or not fully realized, or worse both. ... Read More

VHS : Double Life, A
A few things came to my mind while viewing "A Double Life". Foremost the film's theme of actors unable to separate roles from reality foreshadowed the recent passing of Heath Ledger. The liner notes state that Cary Grant turned the role of Anthony John before Ronald Colman accepted it. No offence to Grant, but I think it a wise decision because I can't see him doing a better job than Colman. Essentially this a high-brow psychological horror film. If you like this film it would behoove you to check out the films producer Val Lewton made for RKO or "The Lodger" and "Hangover Square" from Fox. All around this is a first rate production. One has to start with Colman who gives a performance for the ages. His character is sympathetic despite the monstrous impulses that lurk beneath his surface. The script ... Read More

I'm with Point Dexter--this should be a double feature with The Maltese Falcon. (I just watched it that way.) I saw it when it first came out, remembered it ever since, and recently bought a copy of the VHS tape through Amazon. It IS hilarious. Not 100%? So what--it's good fun. As a general thing I ask God to spare us sequels--but this is a fine *parody,* which is a bird of a different color, if I may mix my metaphors.

VHS : Scandal in Paris
"In crime as in love," says Francois Eugene Vidocq, "there are only those who do and those who don't dare."

This is the amusing, clever story of Vidocq (George Sanders), who was born in a Paris prison in 1775 and spent the next 30 years as a cad, a thief and a relatively successful criminal. And then he became Paris' chief of police and spent the rest of his life catching criminals. It's based on a true story. His epiphany came, according to the movie, through the love of a virtuous woman who was prepared to join him in crime if that was the only way to show her love for him. This so affected him that he decides not to rob the Bank of Paris, confesses all to his prospective father in law (the Minister of Police), who forgives him and blesses the marriage to his daughter. Vidocq, after all, was an even ... Read More

Wonderfully acted. The scenes in the mental institution are very realistic, sad, & disturbing. Kathleen Quinlan is incredible as Deborah & Bibi Andersson gives a very sensitive, heartfelt performance as her caring psychiatrist. Interesting to note that the theme of antisemitism in the book which affected Deborah was omitted from the movie. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.
I was disappointed in the DVD quality. This film deserved better.

VHS : Where There's Life
In his long film career comedian Bob Hope always appeared in movies with vastly different settings whether it be in the Wild West, Haunted Houses, or the Spanish Main however never once did he stray too far from his well known characterisation of the lovable, fast talking coward caught up in a situation he'd rather not be part of. "Paramount's "Where There's Life", from 1947 continues that winning formula where Bob plays Michael Valentine a fast talking late night Disc Jockey who's claim to fame is peddling a certain brand of dog food on air who it is discovered is the long lost heir to a kingdom somewhere in Europe who might just be in need of his services. The hilarity of Hope as the wise guy suddenly finding himself the centre of international intrigue complete with cold blooded spies, kidnapping attempts, and a coldly efficient ... Read More

This was an enjoyable recounting of an actual spying event. I enjoyed the mixture of documentary footage. The ending was interesting. It was amusing to see how old time equipment was used in protecting the US.
