VHS : Trapeze
Love triangle with Burt Lancaster who was injured trying to be one of the first guys to do a triple flip on the trapeze.

Tony Curtis, young gun, looks Burt up to train him to do the triple. Burt gets off the ground, and becomes Tony's "catcher'. Enter va-va-VOOM Gina Lollbrigida who is the "icing" in a mediocre tumbling act.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! It's completely over the "BIG TOP", and the 3 gorgeous leads in their absolute prime look super in leotards, spangles, gitain fishing shirts and berets.

I wish ithis movie would be reissued so it was not so expensive to find one! It's not available on Netflix either.

I chose this movie as a family time movie. We watched it over and over again enjoyed the silly situations that these men got themselves into.

VHS : The Detective (aka "Father Brown")
"What are you really after, your cross or my soul?" asks the international art thief, Flambeau, of Father Brown.
"Both, of course," Father Brown replies.
"Well, come and find us," Flambeau says. "I'll make you a bargain. Whatever you can find you shall have."
"I accept your bargain," Father Brown says, and we're off into a gentle, amusing and thoughtful movie which stars Alec Guinness as Father Brown and Peter Finch as Flambeau.

Father Brown is a parish priest in an English village. He takes care of his flock, saves the souls he can, and tries to put the erring members on more wholesome paths. He also is eccentric -- or at least very honest. He practices karate, loves mysteries, is very near-sighted, is no one's fool and has great but realistic empathy. "I'm disappointed ... Read More

VHS : Last Holiday
Poignant and meditative story about a failed salesman plans to quietly live the last months of his life in a resort. And this unexpected place will ironically become of special significance for all the guests who spent their holydays there.

Alec Guiness is superb in this role. Beatrice Campbell is lovable to watch.

We are expecting its next release on DVD format.

VHS : Story of Esther Costello
"The Story of Esther Costello" has to be one of my very favorite movies with Joan. I know I say that all the time but this time I really mean it. At the very least, it has to be one of Joan's very best movies from the fifties. My three favorite movies from this era, of Joan's six-decade career include: Harriet Craig, Johnny Guitar and this. And they are all so different! If you've seen them all you will know what I mean and you'll know why Joan was such a diverse and talented actress who never delivered anything less than complete and utter perfection!

Here are the basic stats on this movie:
The Story of Esther Costello (November 6, 1957) (Studio: Columbia)
Distributor: Sony Pictures
Runtime Listing: 102 mins.
Screen format: pan and scan
Color/BW: Black and White

VHS : A King in New York
Of the two movies in this DVD, "A King in New York" is clearly the better one. There were moments in it when I laughed out loud. They mainly occurred during Chaplin(the King)'s exploration of New York City. The previews at the movie theater and his experience at the night club were, I suppose, Chaplin's comments on how the Arts had commercialized themselves. There were a few other jokes in reference to advertizing that worked fairly well. However, the movie eventually revealed its' purpose as a condemnation of the Rosenberg Trial (Wow, I didn't see that one coming). Chaplin gave an acceptable performance and I came away reasonably glad that I had seen it. No need to watch it again, though.

The second film in the DVD, "A Woman of Paris" was made about 30 years earlier. It did not star Charlie Chaplin (who ... Read More

What superlatives can one say about Alec Guinness that haven't been said? He was a great dramatic actor, as in "The Bridge on the River Kwai." He was a great comic actor, as in "The Ladykillers." Amd his genius comes through in the subject movie, in which he plays a mild bank clerk who becomes a mastermind thief of enormous comic proportions.

All of the humor is visual/physical, as Guinness and his cohort Stanley Holloway try to chase down some stray loot--in the hands of little English schoolgirls. In one scene, for example, the two amateur crooks race down a tight circular stairway on the Eiffel Tower and cannot stop spinning when they reach street level.

There a lot of laughs here, as in a great chase scene in police cars, and excellent performances. One bit of trivia: What future Academy Award winning ... Read More

I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's singing and some of the other movies that she had played in. I just don't think this was a good choice for her to star in. I felt that they could have chosen someone who looked and sang at least a little similar to Billie. But, I see the director didn't care about that either, instead choosing someone who was famous and popular, though no ... Read More

Professor Barnard Quatermass (Brian Donlevy of "Gamera the Invincible") returns in "Quatermass 2," the sequel to Hammer Production's "The Quatermass Xperiment." This classic science fiction horror masterpiece is as excellent, if not superior, as the original. Professor Quatermass appears to have mellowed since we first met him; he displays more compassion towards his fellow man.

Professor Quatermass learns that meteorites of uniform size and shape are falling at regular intervals and landing in a particular site. Upon further investigation, he learns the landing site is near a top secret government facility that contains huge domes. He is told that synthetic food is stored in these domes? Synthetic food for whom . . . or what? The true nature of this facility is being kept a secret by a government conspiracy involving ... Read More

VHS : The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle
This film comes from a subgenre very popular in the underground of the 60s-70s....the freaked out "documentary" of a band usually involving their extremely hands-y manager. A better known film very similar to this one in style and intent is "The Song Remains The Same" by Led Zeppelin, where like this film, the manager takes a prominent role in front of the cameras with their band. Neither are literal documentaries nor are they completely non fiction, but a curious mixture of both. In this case, I wouldn't feel wrong in calling it an "exploitation" flick, in every sense of the word.

Some of the reviewers seemed to think/expect this was a straightforward rockumentary, so some background might clear things up. Malcolm McLaren attempted to follow in the peculiarly UK tradition of The Great Rock Manager with The Sex Pistols. This is where the manager ... Read More
